Guest Top Chalker
How is your dog bred ??? it depends on the dogs blood lines . i have a saluki x who is 26" and 54lb fit , and my old bull x was 25" and 69lb fit...as for deer it depends what kind of deer you are hunting , I have a whippet lurcher (18 year old now) who took piles of roe when she was young , she was about 35lb, she struggled to hold some of them , and the bull x pulled them with no fuss at all ........for the biger stuff i would want something with a bit of weight about it..... collie/grey 238
I use a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie bitch. Shes 25.5'' and when fit 31kg. Also a 27'' 1/2 grey 1/2 collie dog at 29kg. The 3/4 x is better. Although only used on muntjak and roe round here. Or i should say we used to. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Pre-Ban Most lurchers would hold the smaller types. But i have always showed a preference for the heavier ,muscular lurchers. I dont have a running dog at the mo, but when i get another pup i hope to get one that is big, fast and quite strong. Purely for the reason that i like big dogs....... :thumbs-up: Quote Link to post

Guest Top Chalker
2006 i dont run my saluki x on deer , but she did , pre ban, take roe with no bother , her mother , grandmother all took them no problem , dont no how they would of coped with the bigger types ???I think they might of been a bit light for the bigger stuff, she would get mucked into one but holding it would be another thing ......maybe a first x saluki grey , bigger stronger type .....it depends a lot on the dog itsef , I would be carefull running your dogs on any thing in woods , big trees dont bend !!!in the open if you can . remember running deer with a dog is against ZEE LAW...... dickyboy 1
Don't know much but if it helps i'll tell you about the 2 dogs i know!! Mine is a first x pointer/grey and is 26" and 32kg and very fit, he'll pull roe anywhere he can grab and they just tumble for him, he used to hold on to the back leg but he killed a wounded fox and it triggered something so he now goes for throat and there is no way he's coming off, after a bit of experience he would have gone to fallow but now its illegal!! he does prefer to take hock but his weight has definately added a couple to the bag when they turned sharp and he just rammed them over!! he now leaves very little marks!! my mates bitch is a very fine built first x saluki/grey abt 19kg she has done a couple single handed but was shy to start with she can only really take by the hock and then she moves to the front end but it does stop her from taking every chance that arises... .my dogs weight also helped entering i believe as the first time he did it he took it by the throat and broke it on the way down. she could do fallow as she has a lovely style but would worry about her getting punishment as there is no way shes holding a buck!! don't know what came of all that but thats my experience to date. whin 463
when i kept dogs for the job pre ban i always maintain strength to deal with a thrashing beastie or several a night, dogs over 50 to 65 pounds for roe, ive had bigger but a lurcher has to do a hare a bit rabbiting; walk a wood out or rake a wood out ,the main thing with a dog to take deer is they dont bite the arse out of it,and have the speed to come on terms and get the job done small heavy dogs that lack the gears etc or bite the arse are no good .saw plenty wee dogs latch on and well they bit the hauches etc a good skill full dog or team trip the beastie up bang on the kneck i hate hard dogs on roe that fech good meat up ,and ive saw a few in my time that were only fit for dog meat, for roe you dont need a hard dog but one that holds doesnt rip or shake like a terreir,` your dogs not to smal for roe ive got abitch fifty odd pounds and 24 to 25 inches sheel get them on her own with out a problem, but comes from three generaitions of roe dogs etc im on to the fourth gen now and shees comeing into her own now all the best Quote Link to post
