UphillDoc 278
I had Jose over for a visit and a hunt this weekend, and we had one really nice race. We are cruisin down a two lane highway when Jose spots one on a ridge about 100 off the road. I plow off the road and its a rough ride. The coyote starts loping up the hill looking at the two idiots in the truck. There is a barbwire fence about 30 yards from the road so I pull up next to it and drop the gate. Thats all the coyote can stand and its gettin out of dodge. "Hoss, Lazer and Cracker" go over the fence. They see the coyote just as it crests the hill at top speed. I climb up top the truck to try to see the race, and Jose jumps the fence with his terrier "Rooster" (StevensxNuttall) and follows on foot. I spot the coyote going up the next rise, and its over it before the dogs get to the spot where they saw the coyote go over the first hill. Im thinking its long gone. When the dogs get to the top of the first hill they are lookin hard but with no coyote in sight "Cracker" turns back to the truck. "Hoss and Lazer" keep going in the direction the coyote ran and look to be runnin the wind. They crest the next rise and go out of sight. I cant see anything for a bit then I spot movement about 500-600 yards out. I look thru the binoculars and see its a coyote going full out. In a second or two the dogs come into view and they are in hot pursuit, but still have a ton of ground to make up. I get to see "Lazer" hit the turbos for about 150 yards and then he is behind another hill out of sight. "Hoss" is cutting the angle but "Lazer" is in a whole different league in the speed dept. I stay put for a minute or so to see if they come back into view, but no luck. Jose is still following on foot so I jump back into the truck and go find a gate to get into that section. I get thru and head towards where I saw them last. I spot Jose, and can tell they must have caught it. I pull up and sure enough they got it stretched! I have caught 4 coyotes with "Lazer" and 3 have been long races out of sight. He is easily the fastest dog I have ever owned, and has gathered up coyotes I would have never caught without him, but his distance and ability to stay after them unsighted are REALLY impressing me. I drove back from the coyote to the fence and its was a mile even on the odometer...the dogs went farther with the turns but it was an honest race and catch for sure, IMO. I ask Jose what he was able to see and he says he saw the last 1/3 of the race, and that "Lazer" hit the coyote hard and they both went rolling. The coyote got up and tried to run again, but "Lazer" just overhauled him again. "Hoss" was there on the second roll and they took control. "Rooster" spotted the dogs and beat Jose there, and was hooked up when he got there. Im sure he thinks he killed it... "Hoss and Lazer" are hot and winded, so I lead them away and give them a drink. "Lazer" is wobbling and can hardly get in the truck. Dont know if he hurt himself or just gassed. "Cracker" is just playin along like a pup. He gives the dead coyote a sniff and then back to tryin to get the other dogs to play. I let "T and Reaper" down to have a tug, hoping "Cracker" will join in, but he is fasinated with the terrier instead...LOL He is a big ol puppy in the head, about 18 mo and still squats to piss. I dont have the patience for one like that, so Jose takes him home with him. I cant wait for some cold weather and a lil snow so I can really hit it hard, but the slow start has got me lookin for new ground to run and I been finding some dandy looking new spots... Take care.
