mike1458 14
Hi guys, recently just shot my first deer with a friend of mine. I want to keep the skull but obvoiously got to allow flesh etc to rot away. What is the best way of doing this? ATB Mike Quote Link to post
clint 45
Use a still saw, cut at angle across eye socket level with oposit eye socket ,so leave cap, from middle nose to back of head. Angle so horn in middle as look at line. Leave on shed roof for few week, when fur hard , scrape off with knife, bleach bone. Is good to mount on wood after. patdahat 41
i just leave mine hanging off a tree and leave the fly's and maggots do the job till the skin fall's off, or else burry the head in the ground and leave the antlers stick above the ground so you'll know where you burried it. terrierjohn 49
Boil the skull after you cut it takes ten minutes and you can mount it the same day miles better than leaving it somewhere that you might forget where you put it Quote Link to post

Roonstar 0
Know what you mean Clint, boil it on a camping stove outside, everyone is happy then Quote Link to post
terrierjohn 49
Boiling it doesnt smell any worse than the smell of boiling a hare or venison but if smell is an issue then a camping stove outside is a second option much better and quicker than burying it anyway atb john Quote Link to post
wireviz 8
Boil is the answer leaving it in the ground will remove the cartaliage type glue that keeps the skull plates attached. Quote Link to post

hitshot 0
Looks like I will be digging it up tomorrow them ATB Mike use a large pan to boil the cut skull, trap the antlers with two small pieces af wood with one screw between the antlers to prevent the antlers being submerged in the boiling water, also add a couple of tablespoons of washing soda to help cut the fat, before boiling cut as much of the skin, the eyes and the brain away from the bone, after boiling wet pieces of cotton wool with peroxide and mould around the skull for a couple of days, this should give a bright white look to the skull. Good luck Quote Link to post
