Thanks Lee, the North East Ferret Rescue still has loads of ferrets to feed, so any spare is very grateful.

Try foam insulation pipe (the stuff they use to lag pipes, you can buy lengths of it from B&Q) around the tail about 8" length should do the trick make sure end of tail is about 1" - 2" inside pipe then place a 2" piece of wastepipe over the end to stop him biting the foam and cover with vetwrap. Change it daily and keep the wound clean with salted water to avoid infection. Fit on a buster collar (one big enough to stop the dog bending over backwards to get at tail- you can get one from your Vets for about a fiver). Get some chew deterrent spray (you can get this from Petsathome)and spray a little on end of tail through hole in bottom of pipe and spray all over pipe to deter dog from chewing. Lastly and most important of all do not strap the tail up too tight with the vet wrap, it will cut off the blood supply to the tail and will cause even more damage. Try it out worked for me a treat. The dog may also get into the habit of chewing the tail so once healed continue with the chew deterrent spray on the tail for a while, that should kick the habit. All the best hope it works for you.
