i think my new lurcher pup has parvo absolutley gutted.ive been waiting for this type of lurcher for a while and finally see a litter available make a 400 mile round trip and after 8 hours at home with her she been struck down with all the signs of parvo.was wondering if the blood tests come back tmorrrow positive for parvo what would be the best thing for me to do as ive read that they can survive but be poorly most of there life.has anyone had any experience with this?

This might seem like a strange question but does the pup smell? If not it aint parvo. If its got parvo it f*****g stinks! Its like a metallic sort of "off" smell. Anyway, if it is or aint, obviously theres SOMETHING wrong so (and here it comes again) GET IT TO A VET!!! Im guessing youve already done that as your talking about blood tests so i wish you the best of luck. As far as i know (and im no expert) it CAN be treated and sorted proper if caught early enough.

A lot depends on what strain and how sevear it is,

but 90% of the time if they pull through there fine.

http://www.vetinfo.com/the-long-term-effects-of-parvo-in-dogs.html

There is another illness that mimicks parvo aswell ( cant remember the name just now)

but if it has parvo, you deffanatly know about it.

happylamper - it takes at least 7-10 days from the time of exposure for them to start showing symptoms

doubt your dog would have got it from the rescue, if it was parvo, your dog would have had to have it

before being picked up.

Baught a staffy pup off a smackhead back in Jan/Feb as he was selling it in the snow at 4.5 weeks  .. he asked 120, and i gave him 60.. Didn't want it myself, but it would've died if i didn't take it. Anyway, i fed it, wormed it etc for a few weeks, then when it was strong, i gave it to a friend as a companion. It was out all day, real happy and she had her jabs in july.. got a distraught phhonecall last week, and was told the pup had died of parvovirus :( Real bad news, as she had a really good life. At least she had a life though, no matter how short, so i'm glad i rescued her.. TO ANYONE WHO HAS LOST A DOG BEFORE IT'S TIME, ESPECIALLY PARVO, MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU ALL ;) NASTY NASTY DISEASE..
