matt_hooks 188
28g of 7.5's? You were lucky it was close mate! What you doing packing a clay round in the field? Quote Link to post

Wouldnt have gone for the shot myself with a small load like that. Main thing is, is he did 'drop it'. Congrats with the fox, but probably wiser in future to have a bigger load in one of the barrels for an oppurtunist shot like that. Quote Link to post

Individuals cartridge selection for field work is just that, individual! Personally I have no use for a 28g 7.5 in the field, others do like them, whatever works for you, 30g or 32g 5 is my favoured size for General field work, many will probably argue with that. Whatever, I would favour and even heavier cart for a fox so I would rate a 7.5 28 very light, but these things happen sometimes, and fortunately charlie was stopped, even if it took two tries! sibaldib 6
To be honest, I've shot more foxes with 6s than 1, 2 or SG etc. If you place the shot right the pattern of the sixes does the job. Also you're more likely to have a 6 in the barrel if you are doing walked up etc. Cheers Sib Quote Link to post

tillylamp 1,830
personally i wouldnt have even thought about taking a shot, if i had had 28g 7.5 shot! let alone tell anyone. anyone making that comment certainly doesnt get my respect. its beyond me why people would use 28g 7.5 shot in the field any way. i bet that fox was happy to take a head shot from the 2nd barrel as it would have been in agony from the 1st. there's hunters, and then there's hunters!!!!! Its a fair comment that if you thought you could do it. I have seen posts on here about people shooting fox with air rifles !!!!!!! its true that bigger loads are the order of the day with Fox give it the respect it deserves but we are talking about a one off not the guys usual practice! If he were going out for fox with that setup normaly then BAD TIMES!!!! Nice shooting. Edited October 17, 2010 by CUPCAKE118 Quote Link to post

matt_hooks 188
You state this is your first fox, so of course it's not your "normal practice". To post something like that on here, and then get antsy when people call you on it, is a bit stupid, and getting personal and abusive doesn't indicate a great deal of maturity. Quote Link to post

Oh dear oh dear.........what time scale do you think it took from the first shot to the second? And after reading this it would be very interesting to know what kind of hunting you do? Quote Link to post
tillylamp 1,830
I dont feel I need to justify my hunting with guns because I know what I would shoot with the appropriate shot or I would not attempt to shoot the animal. The time between each shot has no bearing on the situation, its the caliber of shot for a humane kill. If no one had put an opinion on this topic, a novice hunter, wrongly, would think that using a 28g 7.5 load would be ok for foxes ! If a youngster with a shotgun asked the question "what shot and load do I need to shot foxes?" it wouldn't even enter your head to say such a light load, so why am I made to feel that I am making a fuss over what I think is important and humane ? As long as the farmers happy, does it still make it right? You call me a twat .... in your ignorance who's the twat ? Quote Link to post
