Guest Ditch_Shitter
I really couldn't give a flying monkeys f*ck what ye may think of Brian Plummer, 'Hancock Lurchers' or pretty much else, really. I'm just looking to hear some other's views on the absolutely Evily good characterisations in this book. Frankly, I enjoyed the hell out of most of Plummers books, that I read. But then, I read them as what they were; Entertainment. I still think " Nathan " was his magnum opus. " 'Rat Hunting Man ", with it's " Long dead cod " and, " The man from the EHO would love me! " was a Classic. But did he ever get the characterisation of the people we've known So frighteningly 'Right' as he did in " Trog " ? If ye've read it, ye'll know what I'm on about. If ye haven't read it? I'd strongly suggest ye do so! It's Not one of his best, or most memorable works. It has no personal claims of his which ye can then rip to bits when ever his name's mentioned on fora. It has no 'Facts' to dispute. It's just a decent enough read. " Entertainment ". But, I reckon, like myself; Once ye've gobbled up the pages, waiting to see how it all pans out. Have put it aside. Got on with ye life ..... For Years after, you too will find ye minds eye flitting back to the characters he illustrates so well there. People we've known - or feel we surely did ..... some time ... back then: The Chancer with the employability, as well as social intergrational problems. The 'Settled' Gypsy, in his over the top, brass and plush encrusted home. The council estate youngster, with his already life nummbed, vaccuous young wife. Christmass card depictions of badgers ..... " American Pit Bull Terriers ". Surely This book, like no other before, or since it, splits wide open the under belly of all we try to avoid here; And dumps it cold, rotten guts right there in the readers lap? There. I'll bet ye wish ye'd 'Hinted' this one onto ye own xmass wish list now, eh? (Race ye to eBay ~ I'd Love to read it again!) For those of ye, like me, who have read it: What say you? pointer28 1
Haven't actually read Trog, but I think I will now. I have read a few of his though and have found most of them to be entertaining if nothing else. To be honest, I have read loads of books on hunting, shooting, fishing, terriers, ferrets etc. and there are far more bad ones than there are good ones. In fact I try to completely avoid any instructional books now and stick to books like Harcombes "The world of the working terrier" or J Darcy's "dig deep, throw well back" and I find them vastly superior because of the simple fact that they don't try and tell you what to do. If you like Plummer's books, read them and feck what anyone thinks, if you want to wear a pink dress to the hunt on boxing day, do it and feck what anyone thinks. Anyway, happy holidays to all, I'm off to get ready for the hunt on boxing day. Now, where did i leave that pink dress.
MATTI 34
Most of Plummer's book's are hard to put down, but the like's of Nathan and Trog are up there with my favourite's, i've got a copy of Nathan sighned by Brian. You are right about being able to associate his charector's with people you know or have met.
Crow 1
Yeah, I enjoyed Trog, but not as much as Nathan which I consider to be Plummers best book. Lepus is quite good too, as is Rogues and Running Dogs. As for the rest, well I've got them all and I'd say take them as you find them! But back to Trog, yep well worth a read.
