Guest Frank
O, sorry, thought you owned him Still sounds big for a whippet, is he pure bred or got a wee bit of greyhound in him? Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest Lurchers2006
I would say a wee bit of greyhound in him but not put in to the line in a longtime probably just a throwback, Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Thanks. I had a black whippet x greyhound way back in 94, he was a top dog, would take all quarry, 23'' amazing strenght. Good dogs whippet greyhounds if bred right. Although as you say, his mainly whippet. Love to see a picture of him, but no matter, plenty of pics of these on here anyhow. Frank. Quote Link to post

Guest Frank
She is doing great, 15 & a 1/2 inches at the shoulder at present and growing. Have her out everyday, getting her use to crossing ditches, drains ect, she is good and learning all the time, very cautiouse and shy of strangers, but sticks to me like glue. Hows your pup coming on? Frank. Quote Link to post

Hes coming on great, about 70 bunnies so far (all on the lamp) his first hare lastnight on the lamp(Christmas day!! )some say unsporting on the lamp but im not into coursing and the meat is gone to the ferrets , and 3 foxes all in the day. His retrieving is coming on now still abit shy though! Its interesting to keep a record of all came caught i think and surprising how much they get although this is not alot by many peoples standards but its more than enough for me! All from a 13/14 mnth pup that was to be culled at 7 mnths for being unbelievably nervous and shy! All before i got him though and im very happy with him! Do you have any pics of the pup frank? Keep us updated with her progress! Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
i have never seen or heard of a dog that will kill by day but not on the lamp at the end of the day or night a fox is a fox. i owned a collie x bitch that was keen through the day but not at night... i think at night she only had rabbits in mind and when she got up on a fox she didnt want to know... i worked her with the terriers and there was a big difference... i think the difference was that when drawing she had time to get her blood up and quite often at night she didnt get a chance to watch the fox come in??? i dont know, i'm only guessing, but fact is that at night she definatley didnt want to know Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
if u are going to run double handed be very careful, sometimes u can do more harm than good, for instance one of the dogs could miss turn the quarry and run into the other dog, therfore causeing smashed bones and other serious injuries, the other problem you could come across is that the lighter of the two dogs could take hold of the fox and the fox take hold of it, then all of a sudden a 60lb plus bullcross takes hold of the fox, which is holding onto the other dog, this resulting in serious tear wounds to the facial area and mouth of the other lurcher.if you take this advice which is the best i can give you, i have been in this game for a good many years, find a man who posses a dog that can kill a fox no problem, go lamping with him then slip the mans dog on the fox single handed once this dog has hold and is doing the bussiness walk up with the other dog and then release it, you will find after 4 or 5 times after doing this , the dog that is not so keen to take a fox on a lamp will find the balls to do so. plz let me no what u think. LEE i never liked runnin them double handed because i think a dog will often depend on his companion and when he's not there then the dog is at a loss. plus, your right mate, theres nothin as damaging as a fox holding on to another dogs face while the other is shaking it.... my method is as follows, i take them out with a rifle and knock one over. i take the lurcher to him and hold the fox by the back legs encouraging the dog to grip the chest and throat (i do the same with terriers) sometimes the first one is a bit of a puzzle to a lurcher! but i do it a good few times over. then i let him have one and only one with another dog... that usually works for me!!! all of the dogs i've entered so far go for the throat or chest... although the bitch in the avater isnt a hard dog she has caught a fair few and been pretty much unmarked to date... i dont like these jaw to jaw combats they dont do man or dog any good... i think you always get a quicker catch with 2 dogs although rarley a quicker kill... thats my out take on it any way Quote Link to post

Guest oldskool
i take them out with the rifle around 13 or 14 months and then give them a run with the other dog a good bit bit later than that... by that stage they should know what a fox will look like when its sittin in the beam... you would be surprised the young dogs that dont lol... edited to say... I'm writing this like i know it all, far from it, i just found a method that seems to work for me and i have had a few successes as a result even with dogs that have had litter brothers and sisters fail in other owners hands.... molly is the dog in the avator and her brother was writin off as a coward at 16 months... molly dealt with her first fox at 14 months when she came across one by accident... maybe i'm just fortunate in the dog i picked but i think it has alot to do with method... i have entered 6 lurchers in total.. all with the same results!!! and i know where some of the bros and sister are out of other litters and they werent successful fox dogs where as the ones i entered were useful enough...
