"Earth!" 503
why did you shoot the woodcock? Quote Link to post
Ricksomniac 3
why did you shoot the woodcock? The night I shot the woodcock was pretty poor visability and if i'm honest I just saw the eye in the lamp... I wasn't exactly sure what it was until I walked over and picked it up from some distance away. As it happened though, a guy who I work with had actually always wanted to try woodcock so it didn't go to waste. Rick. Quote Link to post

Rick. not being funny but unless you can make out what you have the cross hairs on,you should not have your finger on the trigger and certainly NOT taken the shot. however, you should of eaten it as its very good eating. Fair comment taken on board. Although I will point out I'm not in the habbit of wandering round shooting aimlessly at things. Next time I see a Woodcock I'll have it for myself and try it. zini 1,939
Hi lads, Both of you have a fair point to make there I personally believe that anyone that can say that they have never shot at something whilst hunting and honestly never made a mistake of ID-ing it in the first place correctly, i have serious doubts about their own integrity. That or that person has not been shooting very long at all . I personally know respected regulars on here that i have shot with on my old permission and we have both ID-ed a quarry specias on at least 2 occassions as one species for it to turn out to be some other quarry species once retreaved. Shooting at only a eye maybe asking for trouble as that could of easily be the permission owners cat or small dog laying in the grass. Its not because we are cowboys or just kill evertything we get in our scopes, it was a honest mistake and i believe everyone makes them. Cheers Si Edited October 14, 2010 by zini 2 Quote Link to post

Perhaps I should have explained more clearly to start with that I knew it wasn't a dog / cat / deer or anything of such a size. I could see the outline of the bird ish but wasn't sure if it was a pigeon or woodcock etc... Just want to make sure nobody gets the impression i'm an irresponsible, trigger happy novice. Rick. Cheers Si ive been shooting a long time mate, ive not owned an airgun for around 20yrs but at a young age, bought up on one and as with most youngsters unsupervized,i shot at what ever moved which was killable with an airgun but since then, the only thing i have shot which i can truthfully remember was whilst pigeon decoying. a bird approached the decoys, looked identical to a woodie coming in so i dropped it. that too was a woodcock. lamping,i would NEVER shoot an eye in the lamp,i like to see the out line of the target species. salukiwhippet 6
Bearing in mind of course that shooting any bird apart from feral pigeons is illegal with any illuminating device... James Quote Link to post
