If a dog can still take quarry consistently at 10 years old then he aint seen enough huntin to even be closed to tested.

where do you draw the line and say a dog is tested? a tested dog in one mans mind might not be tested in another mans mind

Imo u could breed two dogs that have never worked and still end up with a good dog..you only get out of a dog what u put into it. some pups are born better than others physicaly which may make them fa

Yes, you could breed the best dog and bitch and end up with a pile of crud. And on the other hand breed two unknown and end up with world beaters. I know of litters from tried and tested parents where not one pup turned out any good.

50/50 are the dogs from good working stuff or a long line of shti...... go for worker to worker ..and try and see the dog do the quary you want it for before you part with your cash....atb x38

Personally I would only have stock from tested parents, I had a well bred dog in his first working season get to a bull x bitch that is proven, it would of been quite easy to have the litter and make some £££££ as the parents of the dog were well tested but HE hasn't proven anything yet so unfortunatley it cost me 80 quid at the vets to have the jab............

There's luck with everything and then again there's training and entering also.

Depends in the type of dog imo... For instace i have owned whippets from show work and racing lines and all have caught rabbits well enough to be worth keeping if i was happy just rabbiting. When it comes to match capable coursing dogs or the hardest working bull type then obviously you aint going to go for a flashy looking saluki thats only ever worked in a show ring and you sure aint gonna use a ned's look at me am ard staffy.

If the ingredients are there imo the parents dont need to be tested aslong as there from a strain that has what you are looking for then the rest is up to you and how you raise and enter your pup but again this will all differ from type to type.

i would say a dog is tested when it can consistently take its quarry. be it 2 years old or 10 years old

and no i dont think a pup has to come from ''proven '' stock. but working blood in it will help.

i have a bitch here (Collie Whippet Grey) 2years 2 months old the reason i got her from a pup @ 6weeks old is because my dog died out 1 night but i had been looking for a brindle collie whippet grey bitch for quite a while her mother was not tested and was a hancock breed but my bitch from this untested hancock bitch is doing her job realy well and couldnt ask for more from her

i think this thread will be intresting

you will and do get good dogs from untested parents, just because a dog is untested it doesnt mean that it isnt bred from top working stock, as not every pup bred from working parents or top bloodlines always ends up in a working home, to be honest its a minefield, what do you do for the best?
