Help identifying these mushrooms

Recommended Posts

whilst out and about today I saw these mushrooms growing on this tree and they seemed to be all the way up the tree ! I have no idea about fungi and I am curious whether they are edible and what they are called. They did appear to have a slimy apprearance which I assume meens they are inedible?

Was the top one growing on a beech tree ? If so, i think it might be porcelain fungus [ oudemansiella mucida ] It presents as white, slimy looking, and grows in clusters. From your picture it looked as though this fungus had taken over the tree, which is another identifying feature of it. The fungus produces a powerful anti-fungal agent that kills off any potential competition.

Incidentally, that anti-fungal agent is so effective, agri-science has synthesised it and now treats pretty much every wheat crop in the world with it.

Anyhoo.... apparently, if you peel the outer slimy layer off, it is edible [ not that i'd try, identifying fungus is too fraught with danger ! ]

Regards, E
