John Keswick 119
Has anyone got any good tips on how to make a CV joint boot stay on? Had to replace a outer cv joint on my van a couple of weeks ago, the boot had come off and spewed grease down the M3 and i hadnt realised till the joint was worn. Replaced the joint, new boot, but the metal clips for holding the boot on, well, i just as well use blue tack as to try and fit those on. So used some heavy duty plastic ties and done them murder tight, but today the b*****d is off again, grease over everything and grit, well, its a bloody mess. Ive cleaned everything off, and got it all back on, this time with a thinner plastic tie. What more can i do?

RossM 8,118
cable ties no good mate, you need the metal bands with the proper pliers or i have in the past used a big jubalee clip, make sure to tighten with a socket rather than screwdriver
Terrier man 38
They dont come with metal clips for nothing fella if bmw could have used plastic ones they would have....Get down your local bmw dealer and pick up one they should have them on the shelf real cheap and alot safer. You will probably need the clamp to put it on if you know anyone in the trade they will have one.

You say special plyers??? Yes an earless(thats once your clips ar earless which I reckon they are) cv boot clamp/pliers once you get one of these you should be able to have it on faster then a cable tie. should cost £10-£20 in any motor factor. rikjd 8
you could use side cuts to put the metal clip on, just make sure theres no grease around the bit of the shaft and boot where the clip is going or itll just pop off again. EDIT to say when i worked on cars i used to use these they did the job well but just for the one off job id stick with jubilee clips if the clips that came with the boot where useless.
