Bonjour compagnons de chasse

This afternoon/evening I decided to check out Ratville for any signs of vermin,its still summer down here so the sun was beating down when I arrived.The down side was the cloud of flys that greeted me as I got out of the van.I rolled the customary smoke,checked my zero and had a scout around.Their were some positive signs of activity around but the shed is full of straw bales so it will be a while before they are more visual.I did see one though squeezing through the corrugated tin to grab a mouthful of maize,I crept up to a good shooting spot only for a cow to spook him.I hung around for a while for him to return but to no avail.I then decided to mooch around the woods for an hour or so and come back to try my luck again.

I often grab a squirrel here if you can get a good view,its often a case of waiting till they show themselves.The first one I could hear but couldn't see,it must of been a good 20 minutes before I picked him up in my sights,and a good 2 seconds to drop him to the ground with a thud.I ambled on till the end was in sight,I thought that was it when I saw a squirrel scamper through a large Oak,he paused for a second and I took my shot...... THWACK.....He ran on a bit farther out of site......then nothing I knew I hit him well but couldn't figure out where he was,I searched around the base of the tree but nothing.I thought I must of fecked up somewhere when he suddenly dropped from above,out for the count.Definitely a first for me.

 

I returned to the feed trough for a look and their he was waiting for his lead supper.I sent a flathead through him and he left planet earth with just a small kick.His twin then appeared for his fair share of lead,I duly obliged and he to fell to the might of the S200.

I packed up to return home with a satisfied smile,and just remembering to take a snap.

I had a looksee out today to see if I could see any sign's of Nutkins around the area I saw him heading for the other day.

Not knowing anything about Tree Rats and their habitat I aint got a clue what to look for other than hearing them bark and seeing their fluffy arse end.

 

HOWEVER: I did see something in the old conker tree that I've never seen before, looked like a nest of some sort, too small to be a songbird nest and too small to be a nest to the corvids I'm sure. Whats the likelyhood of it being a Drey?

 

Should have gotten a pick or two, but by the time I had noticed it, I was in too much pain and on my way home.

I'll get a pic tomorrow if I remember and see what you think, I would describe it as between the two that JD mentions! But its not at the fork of a branch its towards the end

 

I mentioned the other day that I had seen a grey running in that direction from the new section in the Cemy. Gonna have to get my baby fixed and keep an eye out for my 1st Cajun Squirrel :search:

Crackin shots there mate afte being patient and waiting for the oppurtunity to get in range.

I have found the squirrels i've shot some times clamp their big back claws onto the tree and swing in the wind before falling to earth,

Liked that squirrel link you put up,learned a bit about squirrels behaviour,so far only took the chance of a shot when i've seen one.Think i might have seen dreys in some of the treesa,will need tp look closer next time.
