max abell 196
Our ferret court needed its weekly clean out and my daughter bought 3 bags of straw at the local pet centre at £4 a small bag to put in the big sleeping compartment we normaly use shredded paper but we had run out so the daughter thought she would give them a change the ferrets a couple of days later started scratching like mad took a look at them and they are infested with ticks they were stuck behind there ears and even stuck on the faces of a couple of the jills so rather than going ferreting today we spent the whole day sterilising the whole ferret court my daughter picked off and killed what ticks she could off the 10 ferrets and i had some frontline left under the sink so we frontlined them all and the jack russell hope this has killed them all we will never use straw again you think at £4 a little bag it would be treated with something to reduce the ticks to say we were pi**ed off would be an understatement Quote Link to post

CarraghsGem 92
got mites from straw lately, only had it in kennel with 1 dog which is the worst off, few of them have mites now, im hoping frontline will solve the problem. Quote Link to post
longnetter 32
I stopped using hay and straw years ago, there's so much crap on the market I used to throw away loads I started putting the word around that I needed shredded paper for my ferrets and I've never run out since....can't remember how long ago that was. John-B 4
never had any bother with straw when i have had no choice to use it, I have this year had a small problem with a few batches of hay which was totally full of thistles and nettles and obviously no good for ferrets, going to go back to my pet food and horse food place and buy a big bale at a time. stealthy1 3,964
I never use hay or straw any more, I only use shavings and cross shredded paper mixed 50/50, I found ticks on my ferrets in the Summer when they had not been out to work, so I suspected the hay had harboured ticks, not had any problems since Quote Link to post

Mick C. 229
Shredded paper and shavings these days. Ferrets and dogs ended up with ticks from the last bail of straw. You can buy them shredding machines, failing that if you know some one who works in an office ,they should be able to supply you FREE OF CHARGE Quote Link to post
joe14 98
I'd never use straw, seen what damage it can do when it gets 'places' in both male and female ferrets, I just use old jumpers and cheap blankets, wash em when they get grubby lasts agess, dont cost owt and no problems if you keep their nails short.
