food for the lurcher

hi all i need some advice??

i have a deerhound grey and i have only had him for four months and i noticed his weight dropping quick.

he is all jabbed up and wormed.

he has allways eaten tripe and started to loose weight. he lost 3kgs. so asked a friend who has dogs and he said try minced beef, because of higher protien and fat content.

but now he has the sh!ts really bad! and every time he eats it he gets the shi!ts. on the other hand he did put some weight back on with it.

do i just stick with him having the cr@ps until he gets some weight or shall i go back to tripe and see if i can get some other way of putting a little bit of weight back on him.

i just want him to be at a nice healthy working weight.

any advice would be more than welcome and much appreciated

thank you all thorne43

A handfull of rice in his meals will dry up the craps i personaly wouldnt stick to tripe as a running dogs diet i dont feel it gives them all they need i would mix a good quality mixer even a greyhound meal with some cooked dog mince from a butcher usualy around 40-60p a bag and to that i would ad some tinned sardines once a week an egg a couple of days hand full of rice on every other or third day this is how i always feed my larger dogs as they tend to need a bit more i only feed my terriers and whippets meat though unless they are lay up or or in pup i would put them on the above diet.

Regards kris.

Used to feed my old bitch on tripe many years ago, could not get any wieght on her so changed to dry food. If you are changing thier diet then you need to do it gradualy , also the rice and white meat is a good thing when they get the shits, if you are having rice then cook a big pot full and when you have drained and served what you want, crack some eggs in it, they will cook while the rice cools, this can then be frozen in individual portions. I use it to mix with rabbit or offal that I have cooked for the dogs.

keep an eye on your dog mate, the weight loss could be do to something else intestine infection,it might not be but if this persists take the dog to a vet,my pup was the same would eat but wouldnt put weight on and had the propper runs, took im to the vets gave im a antibiotic injection cost £30 hes now sound as a pound, its not always to do with food change, but stick to one diet dont keep changing,it doesnt help is digestive system best of luck with your dog hope all is ok john.
