BREEDING WORKING TERRIERS

when i started out in terriers years ago if you bought a russell or a laky. you got just that a laky that works like a laky or a russell that works like a russell

 

nowadays the types are that mixed and matched /crossed outcrossed/cross bred

 

lakelands that look like russells, russells that work like lakelands patts that stand back and bay russells that close with there quarry and murder it without a second thought hav'nt read the books.

 

you used to be able to go to a certain breeder and get a certain type. that would inveriably work

in a certain manner. these strains are disapearing and in my opinion if you have a type or strain

that produces a consistant workstyle then its worth guarding as its a rare thing.

 

sorry to drone on a bit but i just wondered what you guys/gals thoughts on this where.

am i wrong if not why is this? changing times... messers.... what???

Know what you mean,bloody nightmare..In the process of getting a proper smooth russel line going again ..Been lucky since moving back into my old area

You are absolutely right mate,

When I left school everyone who worked terriers had Russells, and most were small bayers.

Then a few lads appeared on the scene with red Lakie dogs they bought from Cumbria and these dogs at first seemed superior (fox killers) until many got lost/killed at ground.

Only the keepers round our way kept Borders, and they were deemed exotic.

And then there was wierdos like me with Lakey/Bedlingtons .

But I'm quite sure if you had a tick list of traits you wanted in a terrier, you could still pinpoint certain breeders/strains and get what you want.

I would like to say though that some of the best season in season out Fox digging dogs I have seen have been nondescript Russel types.

as far as russells go i remember dogs from way back that had a long working life,to look at them you would never have known it,you'll see black dogs now at 18 mths more marked up than the russells ever were.breeding in the fell type to win at shows has changed the character of the dogs and not for the better imo.

What I mean Joe is that some of the best terriers I have seen working are nondescript Russell types i.e white dogs of no discernable type, rough,smooth, long, short leg. The type of dogs that seem slightly out of favour these days.

IMO i never believe anyone who says that they have a working terrier with no marks cause even a sounder gets hit and a dog that doesn't get hit at all it's whole life isn't (IMO) a working terring.

i now what your saying mate but to be honest i dont worry to much about a terriers working style.as long as the terrier can find anywere and stay till the job is done i am happy

There has always been russels that are harder than other russels and lakelands that have been described as inteligent because they would bay.

Maybe Ime easily pleased(only single handed of coarse) as long as there is a "game bird killer"accounted for at the end of the dig the style isnt over immportant.

the style a dog works is important to me . i want to bolt/dig i nessesary a fox. with as minimum fuss as poss

and as little damage to the dog as poss. i also would like to keep my earths in good order so for me a baying terrier is the order of the day.

 

i have also seen so good nondiscript little russells that could hold there own with most breeds underground

 

i would be interested in anyones opinion on what is THE ULTIMATE DIGGING DOG

THE ULTIMATE DIGGING DOG can u really define that any one breed is better than the other they all have bad and good in my opinion people like the black dogs cause the think there a gamer dog but u also have game russells lakelands and borders personaly i like a dog that when going to ground he knows he is going to work and ur coming to him but as i say thats just my opinion cheers stevie
