Couple of hours at the cemy

Recommended Posts

Well actually it was more like from 18:00 to 23:30 but who's counting?

I got there and went to sit in the new section until it got a little darker, I'd arrived way too early but I had to get outta the house before I took up the offer of a massive argument with the wife :wallbash:

So I sat there, gun in slip waiting for the people from the distribution centre behind me to to clear off and stop shouting at their mates.

Anyways at about 18:30 I notice a movement from the far end of the new section, though my eyes were playing tricks on me, then I saw a flash of grey tail and thought for a second there was a new moggie in the area; Great thats all I need another moggie to keep the bunnies away.

Then it suddenly dawned on me that cats don't move in jumps and hops :icon_eek: Could It be? or am I seeing things?

I looked at the conifers behind Lesley's folks graves and sure enough a Grey Squirrel was making its way across the cemetery  Damn my gun was still in her slip I think I know where he may be heading, I watched as the tree rat ran through the old section over towards the back and then dissapeared into bunny land :boogie: He's off for nuts me thinks. Guess where I'm going soon!

Wow, even if my gun had been out and loaded, I was too shocked to see this furry little meal run through my permission to have taken the shot.

Anyways after seeing that and thinking about my next trip to Mrs G's to take out old nutkins I got my gun out and checked zero, all was fine :gunsmilie: So I just sat with my gun across my lap, watching the Robin, Blackbird and Sparrows, waiting for the the light to fade.

As I turned my head to the left, I saw on a mound of 'displaced' soil a Bunny, bold as brass at about 15 yards.

It was sat 3/4 facing me sniffing the air and staring at me with its eye. Can I? I thought, sure give it a go :D

Slowly I raised my baby up and as I moved my head to the scope, the bunny saw the movement of my uncovered head and face against the dark green foliage of the conifers behind where I sat and calmly turned around and hopped down a hole.

Bugger me, they've started a warren in the new section under all the sandy displaced soil :censored: I aint having that :nono: before you know it they will have the new graves collapsing and thats gonna make me look like a right fool I thought to myself.

So donning my olive green balaclava and my DPM boonie hat I sat with my baby ready to shoulder. "You'll be out again soon" I said out loud to myself "and I'm gonna be waiting"

I just new this trip was gonna produce at least one bunny for the ferrets :boogie: Four previous trips blanked, I wasn't gonna make it a 5th!

Sure enough about twenty minutes later out pops the 3/4 grown Doe, she was cautious as you'd expect but I let her settle a while ans as she sat down and her ears began to lower I made my move.

Bringing my baby up to my shoulder and moving my eye to the scope, the Doe didn't see the movement of light skin against dark background. I placed the crosshair on the side of her noggin and took up 1st stage. A gentle further squeeze released the second stage and a fraction of a second later, theres a loud CRACK as the Doe leapt into the airand landed on her side with her back leg kicking for a second or two in the air and then it dropped down gently and that was it. Lights out :victory:

I walked over to retrieve my ferret food and gutted her there and then, she was laden with 5 embryonic bundles, so that is why the new warrens been dug I reckon  Still good result, one shot, six bunnies :toast:

I'm hoping to be back there again tomorrow and I'll see if there are any more home makers to pick off.

Here the fresh Ferret food posing with my baby before I gutted her

I only saw two other bunnies that night; one was bobbing in and outfrom Bunnyland, not stopping at all so no chance of a shot from that range on a moving target.

The other one I saw at the end of the cemy near the paddock, I lit it up with the red filtered lamp, but by the time I had made it to within 45 yards, it had gone.

I figure the bunnies are only comming out now in the early morning at the cemy, there are plenty of fresh scrapings and droppings, but not a sign of a bunny during the day or evening / late night.
