Hi lads,

I am 18 years old and was going to apply for my fac for a .22lr to control foxes round my syndicate. I already have my shotgun licence. What would you suggest for foxes to start out ? I was thinking .22lr or a .17hmr ?? good choices ?? and also am i too young to apply ?

will never happen.

no UK Police force will authorize either of those calibres if fox control is given as primary reason for owning. (that is not to say you cant shoot them with those but that is a different story altogether!)

If you have land to shoot on and foxes to control but have no shot any of them you need to get some experience with someone who has.

22-250 or 223 are the loads of choice by most fox shooters but I would suggest you will struggle to get an FAC without some history at least.

contact some local guys, sure most people will let you come out with them

If you are dispatching foxes in a trap, a .22lr would be ok.

I have a .22lr rifle & pistol on my ticket with the wording "For the humane dispatching of foxes in CAGE TRAPS".

A .410 shotgun would also be appropriate to dispatch a fox humanely in a TRAP.

If you are talking about shooting them at a distance, you will need a centrefire to be humane, not cruel.

Best advise is to speak to you Firearms Enquiry Officer and see what he or she is prepared to let you have.

Did anyone watch Countryfile last Sunday ???? :whistling:

Yeah, I watched it, they were trapping & dispatching urban foxes & then out with a gamekeeper lamping with a centrefire.

Its interesting how the majority of people seem to have changed their opinions on foxes since the recent attack by urban foxes on humans. I wonder if the hunting ban would have got pushed through if these attacks had happened a few year ago?

When I was about your age I got a .22lr. I shot plenty of foxes with it but I have to admit that quite often I watched well hit foxes run off wounded.

Before anyone on this forum gets on their high horse to me about shooting foxes with a rimfire I live in Northern Ireland and at that time .22 rimfire was all the police would allow for shooting foxes due to the troubles. However with relative peace now things are much the same as the rest of the UK regarding rifles.

I now have a Blaser .22/250. I have shot plenty of foxes with it out to about 250 yards and only once have I had a wounded animal that made it a few hundred yards (it was hit slightly too far back on the stomach as it had moved just as I squeezed the trigger).

I would recommend that you maybe get a .22lr to gain experience with a rifle shooting rabbits/crows etc then move up to a .22 centrefire when you are comfortable with the more powerful calibre. It must be remembered that any firearm can be dangerous if the basic principles of safe rifle shooting are not obeyed.

I tried for the program to come across as best and understanding as possible. This is the first time I have been infront of the TV camera.

I was a bit upset that alot of the interview on camera was cut.

My main points were the fox's welfare and the reason why foxes trapped must not be relocated and dumped which were not shown.

This would have educated the public why urban foxes cannot be taken out of their area and dumped in a foreign environment.

I was glad that the point of ensuring water was poured into the dish in the trap was shown clearly for welfare purposes.

I think that the program gave a bit of a biased view towards the antis point of view, I felt that we the shooting comunity were not portrade vin the unbiased manner which the antis would expect of their views.

And as for the stupid townie woman who said that feeding foxes did not encourage them! its people like her who begin to 'tame' foxes and make them used to human contact who are resposible for foxes attacking humans. A 'wild' fox would run a mile from humans as we all know, but these town foxes who are used to being fed by humans lose the fear of us and are then quite capabl of sneaking into houses.

Just my tupence worth!

I think it was disgusting, shooting foxed with water, you might have its eye out, then you would be knackered when it comes to looking for the pair of eyes in the lamp light.

I thought you came across very well. i knew it had to be edited as you hit charlie with one bullet.lmao.

Considering they always heavily edit footage I think you came across very well....and as you said at least they got in the bit with the water and the fact that you were respectful enough to carry out the final moments of the fox out of anyones view was a nice touch.

Off thread or WHAT? The OP asked a reasonable question. If you guys want to start a mutual admiration society go ahead but start your own thread.

I agree that you are very unlikely to get .22lr, or any rimfire, for the "purpose of . . " shooting fox. Pest control? Maybe. More to the point here is whether you are capable of a clean kill of a fox with a .22lr? With all respect, I doubt it. Get your FAC for .22rf, use it for rabbits, greys on the ground, pest birds on the ground. Ask for advice on here from the shotgun guys on the best loads to use on fox. Then take it on from there.
