Out of Africa

Recommended Posts

My sister-in-law has lived in South Africa for the past few years and, almost inevitably, met a guy who she is getting married to tomorrow. All of us men have been as patient as we possibly can be during the preparations amidst the flowers and ribbons and dresses etc but at about 14:30 on Wednesday afternoon we came to the unanimous decision that one more second of this girly nonsense would drive us all insane. I don’t have a rifle behind a “In case of emergency break glass†panel, but if I did this would definitely have been the time to use it!

The South African entourage are all keen shooters, so it didn’t take them long to acquaint themselves with my HW97K and after an hour or so of target practice we were ready to hunt. The shooting party consisted of 3 burly Saffers, myself, and only one rifle – not the perfect recipe for success in a game of stealth, but it would be fun whatever the outcome.

Byron was the first to get a bead on a rabbit - one grazing happily about 50 yards away from us. A small shed gave Byron plenty of cover to close the range to 30 yards while the rest of us stayed back out of the way. As he steadied himself for the shot the rabbit stood up right on his back legs, and sensing something was up made a run for it. Interestingly though he ran straight towards Byron, closing the gap to 10 yards before stopping, and standing up right again (why do I never get that type of luck?). Unfortunately Byron didn’t take the shorter range into account, and the lack of hold-under resulted in the pellet passing harmlessly between the rabbits ears, and a rather frustrated Bok! He made up for it a few minutes later when, after spotting a woodie landing in a barn, took a 20 yard standing shot and sent the bird spiralling to the floor. Joel then followed this up with a similar shot on a nasty looking feral pigeon which was unfortunate enough to drop by at just the wrong moment.

We spent a bit more time trying to locate and destroy the elusive rabbits, but nothing came from it so our final tally was a low 1 Wood Pigeon and 1 Feral Pigeon. The Saffers seemed to really enjoy their first air rifle hunting trip though, and the return trip is already being planned. All I can say is: bring on the Impala!!
