Just let them get on it... If they mark it, and theres something home, then ferret it... if they dont mark it, dont ferret it, unless you dont beleive in your dog.

Ready made hunting dogs especially those that are good markers change hands for strong money. If ever they are sold.

I

What i have given is a true account of how i got over the problem.

You have to communicate to the dog whats wanted from it .

It's nothing new.

Most dogs will naturally mark hot scent.

Ihave to pups on now that mark rabbit holes.

The secret is to heap plenty of praise on the dog when you see it mark a set.The dog then is aware that this exersise is very rewarding and will go from hole to hole to find you one that is occuppied.

You have to be careful though to much praise and the dog will become avery intense marker. This can lead to false marks

Couldnae be further from the truth.

Never praise a dog for marking, it's reward is getting whatever quarry it is marking.

Which is why good marking goes hand in hand with experience.

JMO and I aint trying to argue with you.

Praise for marking is a road to nowhere and is a direct cause of false marking.

All dogs will mark, some are better than others. By miles

Marking is essential in a Lurcher imo.......a lot of ground i work is almost un-runnable so 90% of my lurchers work in the day is marking. My bitch isn't the greatest at following a scent but when she finds holes she never false marks for me

ps I always praise the dog after the quarry as been dealt with, showing her what she's contributed to catching

marking is a given in all running dogs once your dog has had hold and smelt its quarry the marking instinct is imprinted the skill is knowing your dog and understanding if its a true mark, saying some dogs are better markers is bollocks any dog can stick its head down a hole the skill is with the hunter knowing a true mark from a false especially if your working several dogs

what a load of bollocks!!! we work 5 dogs at a time... 4 will sniff and walk away, the marking dog will come along and mark! simple...And what you on about a "true mark" The dog will "mark" it simple.. either tail waging, pointing, still stance, head in and not come out, etc etc.... Plus a good marking dog will never give you a false mark(as you put it), and why should it.... Thats why there are good marking dogs and excellent ones, they never give a "false mark" as you call it...

in fact , why would you want to stand there scratching your chin saying, "right, am i a good hunter, :whistling: is this a false mark or a true one"!! come on, if you have to do that, you dont trust your dog, meaning it isnt up to the job... You either ferret it, or dont, all depends what the dog tells you... Atb.

You work 5 dogs at a time!!! :icon_eek: Maybe you should get rid of this great marker and buy yourself a mediocre marker but a great catcher, that way you'll not need as big a freezer!!! PMSL, giving advice on how a dog should mark and yet you need 5 dogs to hunt!!! HAW HAW HAW :rofl::rofl:
