runforyourlife 361
A good marking dog brings that extra bit of game...cant beat a good un, that doesnt get it wrong... The picture also made me laugh... The wall was quite thick on both sides but i fully trust him, so it was quite easy to break in there without fear of there being nothing there.. And yes i did build the wall back again. lol. Quote Link to post

tag 29
for me its a must , all the lurchers ive had have marked in one way or another , my bull xs were bought up along side my older ferreting dog , and the bitch ive got now misses nothing , why feed , keep fit and clean up after a bushing dog when a lurcher can find its own stuff and be at hand to chase whatever it puts out of cover , also when lamping if my lurcher pulls on the lead its a safe bet theres something worth lamping coming up ahead , and on quite a few outings ive been walking round the edge of a feild lamping when the dogs pulled towards a hedge or picked up a scent let her go and just waited for her to make contact , as lads from this site have seen ,.... my old bullx was a better marker to ground , as he did a lot more work with terriers , wich comes in handy when working earths that run the length of a full hedgerow in the dark { depending on the amount of permission} on the day/night . just let the dog off and he would try and dig his way in , and theres nothing better to see a lurcher running up a hedge line only to stop dead in its tracks smelling the air then backtrack to a place in the hedge and dive into cover to get to something , i think a good nose is an essential trait a lurcher needs to posess ....... wexford Pa 84
Had a great bitch who positively marked an occupied earth, a very handy tool to have.. We'v often came across an earth, looked fresh, smelt fresh but bitch didnt mark, dropped a terrier just for the terrier to leave within mins.. So a marking lurcher is a very handy tool, whatever quarry u hunt.. .... Pa Quote Link to post

Guest stewie
any dog with half a nose will mark well its nothing special just a basic thing that all lurchers do if shown plenty from a young age Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
I'm sure all lurchers have half a nose, and most have a full one... Some are better than others! 5 go out together, all will have a sniff but lose interest, a good marking dog doesnt.... they will persist until you intervine. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
My present bitch drove me mad over a one holer next to a gate where I park my motor to walk a perticular field, every time I parked there she would stubbornly stand over it, and it got to the point where I wanted to kick her arse as hard as I could, but patience got the better of me, so I decided to run the ferrets through to show her it was just a bolt hole, it produced 8 full grown rabbits Quote Link to post
