Phantom 631
Hey guy's, sorry for the late posts (got another to do yet) Got a call from Dillan last night as I was making a reply to his question about another session on the Pig Farm Of course I jumped at the chance So off I went to make sure the gun was pumped to pressure and get my gear on, just as I walked down the path Dillan pulled up and off we went Got to the permission and while Dillan got his gear ready and set up for the vid's I was making my way to the 3rd shed. Opened the shutter flick of the red lamp and there is a fair old sized rodent! As I drew a bead on him and took up the 1st stage, off the wall he jumped and legged it away from me, no worries; I had my crosshair on him and slotted a pellet right between the shoulderblades. He lurched forward by the impact then got up and ran to the nearest hole. By this time I had another bead on him and the pellet landed in his chest as he vanished through the hole. One down! *1* I then made my way to the 'Productive spot' at the far side of the farrowing shed. Loaded and with my eye at the scope I swung around, flicked on the lamp and Nothing Half a second later a jewel of red moved from the right towards the farrowing shed and was gone. Lil' feckers gone inside the shed I told myself and quickly opened the sliding door to the shed. Inside I went, but there was no rats to be seen anywhere. I made a methodical sweep of the shed, up one isle down the next and up the next before moving into the next shed at the back. I arrived there and was greeted by some of the nosiest pigs you could imagine! They all came over to greet me expectantly, perhaps hoping for food; although they had plenty in the feeders. I left that shed and walked back through the farrowing shed, when I saw a little piglet, smaller than the rest of his/her kin, it was shivvering on its own laid down next to the wall of the pen. Not good I thought, it need to be closer to its mother for the heat and food from her, so I picked up the little un and placed it next to it mother's teats between its siblings. It wasn't long before the others had shifted it back away and it was back up near the wall On my way out I told Dillan and we went back and I showed him the little piggy. The heat lamp was not on so after a little while looking we found the switch and turned it on. We put the piglet back with its mother at the teat, but again it was soon kicked back out by the much stronger piglets. Dillan put some hay under the lamp and the piglet laid on it and thanks to the heat from the lamp stopped shivering. Dillan went back to his shooting and I continued moving from shed to shed. Next shed I opened the sliding door and scanned the shed, over to my left above the little Piggy houses was another juvenile climbing up the wall, click and slam went the 16grain pellet straight through it back near the neck. There was a puff of dust as the pellet exited and smashed into the breeze block wall behind, the rodent fell backwards landing on the roof of the piggy houses. It didnt move again, sweet! Soon after from the other side of the shed, came another Juvie, it dodged left and right, every time the the lamp settled on it, it moved eventually making the mistake of scaling the breezeblock wall, as it reached halfway it felt the lead and immediately fell down. Thats Three down. I moved into the shed of 'Horror' and there on the far end was another rodent looking decidedly cocky sat on a wall. Cheeky vile creature take that as I let off anothe 16grain FX micromissile, bang in the head! YES!, by the time it fell off the wall and landed in a bit of hay below, it was not moving and its legs were in the air. I got a photograph but left it where it lay. I then moved along to the next shed, nothing around outside at all. I opened the door and over on a far pen wall another Juvie was making its way across, I took aim but being above pigs I could'nt get a shot off until it came to the end wall. I squeezed the trigger and missed my target, the pellet slapped the wall at the side of where it was stood. The little git made a run straight forward towards me! I reloaded and got another bead on him, crack the pellet struck the wall top in front of him and he ran back, climbing into the gap in a breeze block; where it stayed; I could see its whiskers and nose twitching. I reloaded and walked over to the part breeze block. Putting the muzzle inside the hole I stood back a bit as I didnt want to get splattered with blood. The butt of the gun would only allow me to go so far, so thinking the little blighter was now kissing my baby's muzzle, I let fly with a pellet. Bang! block moved and so did the juvenile rat, it jumped forward across my silencer and off the wall, reloading as I went; I chased the rodent down to what I thought was a dead end, there was a tiny hole in the wall and it dissapeared. This shows how narrow the corridoor is; My muzzle was inside the block to the left, the butt of the gun was against the wall on the right. You can see the pellet strike in this image The rodent was in the left corner! I told Dillan about this miss, he pelied "I can just see the headlines now, THL Marksman 2010 misses a point blank shot" and we had a good chuckle. I said well at least it will be easy to identify when we eventually get it, as one side of its face won't have any whiskers. I went back and started the rounds again; This time in the third shed I had a rodent comming along the wall directly at it, I know what your gonna try I thought as I aimed directly between its eyes, remembering the closeness of the rat (and how I missed that big un because of the same) I aimed right at its nostrils and let the pellet fly. It stopped dead and at first I thought I had missed. then it just seemed to drop as if its legs had given way and I noticed a drop of blood Where it fell What a Shot Later as I was making myway over to where Dillan had been shooting and filming, I saw a rodent another Fairly sizable one running towards me as I passed an open shutter. I followed it through the scope as it got closer and closer. Then a little squeeze of the trigger and an almighty CRACK then a whizzz as the pellet (unknown to me) had hit the plywood in front of the shutter gate and this caused it to fly back, I heard another crack a fraction of a second later as the pellet hit the side of the next shed to my left That was wayyyyy too close for my liking! Remember people, when shooting from close range over objects, make sure your muzzle line is above the object as it (like in my case) may not be visible in the scope! I found Dillan and we gathered up a few of his kills using my long forcepts; I think he had six deffinate kills I informed him of my cracker of a head shot and showed him the pic on my phone. Dillan congratulated me and told me about one of his best shots of the night; Another through and through in between the eyes and out through the ear Excellent shot buddy, well done Dillans Head shot And another view of the same I'm sure Dillan will put up the Vid's of his session on this thread. Group shot of some we recovered, not huge feckers like we wanted, but sizable all the same In total I think we both had half a dozen confirmed kills each. Next time we go, I will be taking my HW40 for the ones inside the nests in the roof and the very close ones hiding inside blocks Again Dillan a Massive, massive thanks, I really appreciate the trips out. dillan 19
:clapping: :clapping: :clapping: Good session Phantom and good write up. I think after months of shooting we may have got on top of them, hence bagging fewer, not to worry though as now the colder weather is drawing in it will draw them in from miles around for warmth and food. Managed 6 shots with 6 kills myself although I only managed to retrieve 3, all of which were perfect head shots, so I was well pleased, mind you you wouldnt expect anything else really would you with the set up I was using. It was a pleasure yet again for your company and banter. Ill put up some vids to complement the photos. Dillan Edited October 7, 2010 by dillan 1 Quote Link to post

Atb marti Awwww, yah BIG SOFTIE :D I'm hoping that the little thing survives It'll look great on a plate with mushrooms and a couple of sunny side up eggs  The Cemetery is a good permission as well, just much more leisurely shooting and the little beggars are still there in numbers, its just getting there when they are out. I've gotta start doing some really early mornings there Still got the other night's write up to do about the cemy as well Darryl was in Hull today, he was gonna drop in, but he woke me up and I could'nt think of anywhere close to park his big rig Now I know where he can park easily and more importantly safely so next time, its a guarenteed fresh coffee (or tea if thats his choice).
