Air rifle blueing.

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I own a AirArms TX200 which i bought second hand of this site. However the last owner has removed all the blueing, they have left it pretty clean and done a reasonable job, but it still looks ugly and of course the metal is open to the elements.

I've just phoned my nearest gun dealer and they quoted £150+ for a proper blue dip. Far to much to be justified on my gun.

What would you all recommend, is there anywhere else where i could get a professional blueing job done at a realistic price? Or is there any DIY kits which provide a good finish.

Any comments welcomed.

Thanks

Alan

There are plenty of DIY kits about, they are all pretty good at what they do, which is mainly for touch ups and small areas.

They are all chemical kits, either with liquid or with gels that you leave on.

For a hot dip blue job this envolves getting your metal work very very hot, then putting into an oil bath, remeber how you used to do it in metal work at school? same thing.

Im sure there are a few people on here that have home made oil dips and blow torches, I persoanlly have touched up bits of blueing the old school way: heat metal with blow lamp then smear 3-in-1 oil over it, then reheat with blow lamp. The oil smokes then turns blue. You dont have to get the metal glowing like a poker, just very very hot.

At the end of the day mate its about how much the cost of it is worth to you, You dont want spend £150 quid at the gunsmiths, may as well have a go yourself, whats the worse that can happen? It looks shit and you just rub it down again?

Strip your gun down to bare metal, no plastic or rubber left etc, get the blow torch on gently and evenly heat all over till its damn hot then drop it in a tub full of oil, stick some wooden dowl in both ends of the barrel to stop the oil getting in the bore.

Or - just prime and spray with car paint in a colour of your choice?

All the best

Mark

Thanks guys.

If i had a synthetic stock I'd be tempted to try and paint my own camo pattern, but with a wooden stock i would like to get the whole thing looking original.

£70ish for the whole gun inc carriage both ways at Manchester Airguns. My mate got his TX200 done there not that long ago

Cracking job too

£70 Seems more reasonable. I'm speaking to Manchester AirGuns tomorrow to get some more info. Any chance you could get some pics of you mates gun posted. I'd love to see how deep the blueing was. Also what condition was the gun in before he got it done.

Anyone got anywhere else worth trying for blueing

Thanks

Alan
