Malt 379
the dog is a machine back before the ban you should b able to put your dog to ennythink and the dog should kill it being its a quick 10 seciond fight or a 10min fight the dog should do it not the owner other wise we might aswell all run around with guns the dogs their for a purpuse to kill it so we dont have to Another non hunting bloke with a working dog... The dogs job is to aid you, after all you're supposed to be the hunter... Do you leave your ferrets to finish off the rabbits, or do you step in and despatch yourself? PS. It's not hard to dispatch a fox, especially when your dog had hold of the business end pre ban... Quote Link to post

jac 12
people who enjoy watching a dog and its query fight to the death are no more a hunter then a man who likes dog fighting. And you don't belong in the hunting world you belong in a mental hospital Quote Link to post
stabba 10,745
Whatever the quarry..if you aint got the balls to handle it while its alive...you shouldnt be hunting it..atb stabba Quote Link to post
stainlee 27
Good thread ...should sort out those who hunt using fieldcraft, and who have a genuine affinity with thier dogs and respect for thier quarry , from those who kill , count ,and brag. Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
Just thought I'd start this thread after reading the beddy/whippets/deer thread.. Just wondering what peoples views were on using a dog to hunt with. In my opinion, a working dog is there to aid you in the act of hunting. It shouldn't matter if the dog can kill the quarry outright, all it should have to be able to do is hold up the quarry long enough for you (the hunter) to get there and despatch the quarry. I think you should be able to despatch any quarry by yourself if you set out to hunt an animal, no matter what it is. If your not prepared to do so then I seriously don't think you can class yourself as a hunter, you're just a bloke with a dog. Sensible replies please.. This is certainly a great thread Mal.It's restoring my faith in the lurcher scene. (I agree with your opinion by the way). Quote Link to post
genuine 81
Well its one of the only threads i have read right the way through it the past few weeks, a good one at that! Dogs that can kill all the quarry stated above out right are very few and far between! Dogs that can go out and catch all the obove and with a little help to get a fast clean kill, well theres a few more of them about! And thats the way i prefer to go about my days in the field! The dogs there for me and im also there for them! Different dogs for different jobs! If anyone has a dog that can retrive rabbits live to hand, take hare(pre ban) Roe, Reds, charlie and big rats, and kill them out-right well you have some machine! Im not talking the odd one a year either im talking week in week out! Good Thread Quote Link to post
genuine 81
what makes you say ya need a big beefy bull x to finish the job?? whos says that mate? Quote Link to post
Borat 8
Not all young dogs are fast learner's.. Some "fumble" about on thier first single handed run Pre-Ban, and maybe get a good kick or dragged by a strong fallow buck.. No point in having a maybe up and coming great worker ruined in my view.. stroller 341
i only hunt rabbits but i dispatch them as soon as they are in my hands wether netted or retrieved by the dog. a wild animal must go through a helluva trauma if a hunter allows his dog to maul it to death. 1 Quote Link to post
snap 15
defintley companion for me and yes get in there and help with edible quarry but as for pre ban foxes that was a fox dogs job. if i felt the need to help the dog dispatch a fox i wouldnt be using him because afterall he was bred to kill foxes not hold them untill back up arrives.jmho 1 Quote Link to post
