ozzieowl 53
not being funny fella i do that many 6 nights a week with dogs under 23 inch 1 runin is 20 inch here last night night before i can go on and on but wont bother fella good luck in your sport nice photos mate. We know small dogs are good at rabbiting and lamping rabbits is one thing but do you think them same dogs are capable of beating a tried and tested hare dog? Personally I dont think so. I'd like to be wrong but I don't think I am. i agree mate even though they look and maybe are great dogs nice to see someone getting full pertential out of there dogs,by the way good pics mate. Not many whippet crosses used etc for a hare dog but I'd love to see a small dog wipe the floor with the stereotype dog.... I dunno, I think its a british mentality to want to see the smaller man win. Nothing better than seeing a small horse win badmington or look at seabiscuit, etc.... legends. Quote Link to post
lord of the fens 23
LORD OF THE FENS but if 1 ever got the chance to run on the fens against one of these good coursing mens dogs and just say it won think of the excuses these people would come out with,It cant happen it wont happen as also think of the money on the pups sales and the books being written about the great coursing dogs it would be terrible You have hit the nail on the head mate. Why would such men run a small 20 inch dog, what good would they get out of it if they won? Lets face it, they'd be expected to win. But if they lost..... WOW..... can you imagine!!! I had a guy telling me the other day, don't know if you know him, he goes under the name The Colonel.... I call him the colon for short Anyhow, he put a picture up showing his fabulous saluki wanting everyone to bow and courtesy... the dog didn't look much to me and I pretty much said so.... well, his first response was what the dog was worth, how it was a £1000 dog, how I couldn't afford a dog like that(he was f*****g done if you ask me), how much money he made a day..... honestly, you couldn't make it up. All this information surrounding money just cause I had the audarcity to slate his dog!!! Now, this line of thinking in the saluki fraternity is the norm, its all about money I'm afraid and reputations. Both go hand in hand.... the bigger the rep the more the dogs worth etc.... to the point where they are frightened to run their dogs against anyone incase they fail. What a state of affairs.... The funniest part of it all is.... they are only legends in their own minds!!! Quote Link to post

big chief1 40
Don't know much about hare coursing, but I'd have thought length of back was more important than height? i love hare coursing. got 6 dogs different sizes different shapes. got two pups same length one being 25tts the other 27. the higher dog has more speed the long dog is plodder, both will kill there quarry, dont think it makes much difference depends where you run. obviously fields a whippet will get hares easy whether its 19tts, on fen you want dog with plenty of stay, so a longer back (for longer strides) and nice big chest deep and wide is needed, but that doesnt mean a big, long dog will do well on fen, depends on breeding mostly. Every dog is different, dont think you can say which dog is best.theres plenty of 27/28/29 tts that are jackers and plenty of whippets at 19 killing hares within 60 secs, personally i like to keep big and small, so i can pick the dog for the job, a good alrounder would be 23 to 25 tts. imo. big chief1 40
one of the pictures is old but the clearer one is of the rabbits a pup of mine caught on a nights lamping, hes 24 inch to the shoulder. good haul mate, rabbit dogs will do that every night, think the fellas on about hare dogs, daytime hares on fen those dogs WILL pull up, not dogs fault if it did though, right tools for right job. But my saluki bitch would catch 2,3,4 s regular up country, and could take her lamping rabbits, caught 14 in under half an hour in one field with her, there are exceptions for uses.my rottweiller caught two rabbits on the lamp, so they are not that hard to catch and hes about 7 stone. lamping is murder we have hauls as big as yours but hares, its wicked, no sport. rather walk all day for a decent daytime run than catch 10 on the lamp.
