Does height matter?

Recommended Posts

Do you think height matters when it comes to a good hare dog? I prefer my dogs to be around the 27" mark but that's just my personal liking. You hear folk saying about a big dog that it will make a good hare dog and if a dog is big it cant get down to rabbits.... Which I know is a load of shite.... But what you reckon, can you get small consistant hare dogs?

my other bitch which i have now is 20 inch to the shoulder can take both but cannot keep nowhere near a 26inch lurcher in the field, shes good for bolting rabbits and quick of the mark but on a long run even though shes got stamina, this is where the bigger dog comes in,im not pulling anyone with a small lurcher as i have one myself but over the years of going out and seeing loads of lurchers in the field its my opinion.

Don't know much about hare coursing, but I'd have thought length of back was more important than height? :hmm:

your spot on there Maltenby,

i knew of a fen dog that went for ALOT of money it was only 24"

and like you say it was long in the body.thumbs.gif

height would only matter on thick ruff heather etc.. for obvious reasons
