Trying to make my Dad happy . . . .

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Well i have been thinking about this today, not sure how good an idea it is posting it on here but here goes. . . . .

Recently my old man has been having a really tough time, due mainly to family events. As a result of this he has become very depressed, has stopped working, ceased contact with his friends and is generally having a crap time. I have been searching for something to try to lift his spirits and get him back on track, but have not been able to find it. He spent many years keeping and training dogs (mainly gun dogs) and was very well respected within his field at one point, sadly due to another set of family circumstances he gave up dogs some years ago (i think this was the beginning of the depression). After long thought i have decided to get him a lurcher of his own to run this season, he has always shown interest in my dogs and is a keen ferreting partner (well was more so before he began getting really depressed), i think having a dog of his own to run would get him out and give him a sense of purpose, as well as a sense of something depending on him, it will give him a place and companion.

As a result i am trying to find an adult dog, which i know is an absolute nightmare. I hope to find one that has good recall and retrieves, and preferably one that has been started on the lamp, although if the recall and retrieving is there, then the rest is not so difficult. To be honest his only real quarry will be rabbits, so it doesn't matter how the dog stands with retrieving bigger quarry. Other than these traits, ability to be kenneled with other dogs and a nice temperament are the only other criteria. Age, colour, x/breed are not so important. A trial would be good.

If anyone has such a dog that they are trying to find a really loving hard working home for, or knows of one, i would really appreciate the heads up. I know that this is probably more suited to the 'wanted' section, but i'm not sure how many folk would see it there.

Anyway, cheers fellas.

Jai.

I think its a good idea mate ..really i do.. my dogs helped me through a seriously hard time around 8 years ago ..and again a couple of years ago ...there's a wheaton x free to good home 5 months old ...good age for your dad to start with ..properly out of the puppy stage and likely ready for some time spent with it

I think that's a fine idea and a well thought out post too

I proper struggled for a long time with things that were going on, and my dogs are pretty much what saw me through. My life has been vastly changed, and bettered, for their company.

Best of luck in your search and in helping your Dad.

I couldn't agree more, a few months ago i found out i was about to be made homeless, nearly everyone told me to rehome my dogs as i would be staying in hostels, i refused, point blank, my dogs are mine and it will stay that way until they pass away, luckily i found 2 seperate foster homes for them (1 with a member on here) I can't wait to get them both back :D

I think if you give your dad a dog, it will slowly pull him out of his depression, probably without him even realising it, good luck
