Bill,

Technically they aint endangered (yet), but they are on some red list or other

Apparently for every one you see today there were 4 at the start of the 1900's but according to the people that came out with those statistics, there never was nor is there a way of determining how many are or were shot each year; nor is there a figure stating how many there are left in the UK, one estimate is there are 4 million breading pairs; so I'll leave yaw'l to figure out how they come up with those statistics cus I aint got a fecking clue :hmm:

while we are on the subject of recomendations, Edwina Curry nearly killed of the British egg industry when she recomended we dont eat soft boiled eggs because of Salmanella, Hitler reccomended he should front a master race and wipe out all the other creeds and colour of humanity and look what happened after that one!!!

I recomend that anti's give up their opinion, but is that right? Will any one of them listen

hares are not endangered, they arent close to it and i dont think anybody need worry about them becoming endangered.they had a hard time up in some moorland areas when the freezing weather came earlier this year and it had us worried but from what ive seen so far theres a few about, and ive gone to places this summer that were teeming with them.........just silly numbers that the estate managers told me would need culling in hare drives using shotguns where over a hundred taken in a day is the norm.

the anti brigade want the public to believe that hares, badgers, hedgehogs and all birds of prey are facing extinction.the opposite is often true and they become a pest.

Jasper, this has really touched a nerve for you hasnt it!!!

There is land i work which does not have many rabbits but the hare population is healthy, i wont say much more because the bull cross brigade would have a hard on if they only knew :tongue2:

They still need controling, all be it with a suitable air rifle if the shot arises, which more than often does.

A well placed shot will drop a hare equally as well as it would a rabbit, no bother. So i dont see a problem.

I am on the fence here a little as a few of my good friends dont agree with shooting hares but they are seasoned dog lads, set in their ways and eagerly waiting for a change in pollotics. We regularly have healthy heated, exchanges of views and opinions over the shot hare.

As long as i have a hole in my arse(or a clear definative law is made) i would continue they way i mean to go. If the shot presents itself, take it.

Most people will have their own views, fine, however most anomosity will come from a dog man.

Put it to bed and crack on jasper :big_boss:

Trust me pal I was over it before it started the time before .

I did the poll out of Interest to see what the overall view was on taking Hares with 12ft/lbs rifle due to the amount of interest generated before. if there's alot more people saying Yes! perhaps the BASC should take note on their recommendations...

Nothing anyone put on here will ever sway my judgement on weather to squeeze the trigger on a Hare while its still law! if I want to take one I'll do it with no questions asked, it will be my choice and one I'll take if I'm happy with the situation presented to me.

Having said that Moxy! I could of shot many more since the last but have no intention of doing so, Its Rabbits and Pigeons I'll make use of now not Hares ...

Ive shot quite a few hares with air rifles. Its no big deal just like shooting a rabbit, they die instantly if you head shoot them. Im not fussed about what basc deem appropriate to shoot with an air rifle. I know they are fine quarry from experience not reading a little leaflet.

So you dont fancy a trip up to me one day jasper, to drop a good dozen, guaranteed?? No? oh well you stick to your bunnys, lol

;)

Im glad your over it, nothing worse than sleepless nights.

thanks for the offer but Not for me mate! they're plagued with them here and regulars in my Garden field :D. its bunnies I want for the meat, not because its good meat but because its nutrition value is alot lower than somthing like Hare! very handy when I'm bringing a Hawk into condition to fly, Rabbit is a excellent diet allowing them to eat plenty but maintain the weight, Basically they can eat alot without gaining much weight! helps me during the manning period...

I can sleep sound Moxy! when I click the mouse Its all entertainment to me pal .....

The fact are that the BROWN Hare was brought to the UK for Hare Coursing, it is not a native to the UK, the Mountain Hare is.

It has been maintained in the country over the years by Hare Coursing. It has been the change in farming methods and the ban of Hare Coursing that has led to the Hares decline. Hare Coursing meant a supplimentry income for farmers from the coursing clubs when it was legal and so Hares was a thought when the farmers cultivated their lands.

There is really little sport in shooting them and unlike coursing unselective.

However as Coursing is illegal I would shoot them as well to eat if I fancied one.
