Lots of discusions lately taking place about taking Hares with Air Rifle's which seems a bit of a gray area.

it would be interesting in this poll to see quite how many of us as responsible shooters knowing our capabilites would take one on? either Calibre includeing the not so popular calibres.

It was correctly pointed out in a previouse Hare post by Inan the BASC's Air Rifle quarry recommendation! It seems Hare is not on their list.

It will be interesting to see how the poll turns out and if the BASC's recommendations are justified in the eyes of fellow Hunters.

As with alot of things i dont feel its a simple yes or no answer.I have shot Hares with various guns on land where i couldnt hunt them using other methods.

I wouldnt feel the need to kill a hare where dogs or a B.O.P. could be used.I dont however feel its a grey area,im a person who goes hunting with dogs, guns are just something to play around with, not something i could ever get any real enjoyment from.Another person could feel the opposite to how i do,it just depends on what we like.I have mates who have gone from working dogs fairly regularly to spending alot of time with guns.I prefer to watch dogs hunting they prefer to shoot.Simple as that.

hi jasp,i shoot quite a few bud with no probs all clean kills with my .22 bsa ultra multi, but i do like to be no more than 25 yards away from them...any further i leave them, that way i no i will kill them outright...and i do eat all my quary as well, and the dogs get a look in now and again.lol.i must admit i dont see what all the fuss is about with shooting hares anyway, as long as you shoot them in the shooting season which is 1 august to the 29 february in the uk .

i hope this info is some help to everyone...

Hare's again, gone tomorrow :whistling:

Yep I would and I've voted. It may be a 'Gray Area' with airguns but there is no legal restraints on it other than shooting them on Christmas Day. Hunting / killing them with dogs as far as I am aware is certainly illegal?, wheather we agree with it or not.

Also there is no 'closed' or 'open' season on them. It is however Illegal to "Sell" them between March and July which is their breeding season. But you can still carry on killing them  despite them being on a 'red list' of endangered animals.

I believe that they will eventually be protected by law; but until they are, if I see one on any of my permissions (apart from the cemetery as its strictly bunnies), its going in my oven  and will be put to good use as food.

Hares dont need protecting against extinction so i dont know what the The Brown Hare Preservation Society do :D:D

You arent supposed to kill hares on moorland or unenclosed land during the off-season,but thats just isolated parts of Britain.Personally i wouldnt want to kill a hare in the breeding season anyway......legal or not.Plenty of other vermin stuff to shoot at.
