SHEEP WORRYING

Recommended Posts

Went out for my usuall walk on the hill this morning with just the 3 lurchers, walked for around half an hour and the lurchers take a line about 400 yds away from me..there i see reynard going flat out over the stones and making his way to a huge rush bed with my 3 behind him, when i get over to them they loose him briefly and take up the line to a rock pile where i assume he has gone into, away the 3 go up and over the stones, when i get to the top of thre stones to see a view of the valley bellow two of my lurchers are just in front of me with my other one ragging in the rush bed..GREAT "i thought"but why did my two stop dead ? well i eventully walk over and find out ! shes on a black sheep FUC..G GUTTED...all the hard work at the end of last year and the last few mts getting them fit and slowly bringing them on and THIS,im not going to make excuses but the weather wasnt the best with a bit of hill fog and light rain and the hill was coverd in sheep..but WHY,last year this bitch accounted for 6 single handed, and a few heavy customers she started to make good earths, and even missed a fox and came back thro a flock of ewes...shes 25mths old and i thought this was going to be a good season for her NOT NOW IT AINT..GUTTED :(

mate if you have had dogs as long as you say the dog deserves another chance take it out on its own and try her again many factors could have contributed to this had a dog once never bothered any livestock but one day fired into a sheep when other dogs got excited gave it another chance turned out best dog ive owned

So, what have we learned ???. My first post questioned why you even brought this to the table if (and I think you had) already decided on a course of action. If the dog was an out and out sheep worri

Okay, think Shit Stirer fits the bill better..

You can't keep a dog that kills or worries sheep and expect to work it, it just cant happen. Anyone who has a retired worker knows how hard it is for the dog to see you and another dog going to work a

its a tough call espically as she is such a good bitch in others ways..but you need to totally trust your dog, especially if they run out of site a lot...there is nothing worst than worring every time to your dog runs out of site over the brow of a hill when there is sheep about. my own dog was out ferreting in a sheep field when he was about 2 years old. been in field about half hour and missed 2/3 bolted rabbits as they hopped from hole to hole. all of a sudden he took off, running past a couple of sheep and steemed right into one.:thumbdown: anyway he has never done it since but it took a few years to get that trust back, espicially as we dont get many sheep on the fens but when we did come across them i was on edge when he was working unsited.

Get a shock coller put the work in! never mind PTS FFS!

Id be doing the same just put the electric coller on full blast give her a few vibrations let her know its there and the off you go, if the she takes off after sheep shock her its never failed, shes obviously not stupid and knows its wrong and you must put alot of time and effort in to your dogs! Im not a one for chances but on this occasion with the sheep being black she deserves a chance! I had the same problem with mine and she doesnt look back black or white the collor will work!

You should have gave the dog a doing at the time. Had the same prob with my old tan bitch when she was young. I thrashed her there and then never happened again. You've got two choices you can take the dog on it's own for a bit and start taking her through sheep and correcting any interest she shows. I think u missed a good opportunity at the time. Hope you sort something out.

At the end of the day mate, it's your dog and it's a hard choice.. And you know your dog more than any other person on this site.. Even if you did "thrash" her there and then, she's already done it, some may never do it again. But if you're not there and she's out of sight, it's not worth the hassle and risk as she's done it once and may think about doing it when you are not present..

I know of a German Wirehaired Pointer, proper hard working german import dog.. The owner had him working and he disapeared, found him on a sheep.. He got thrashed on the spot, he never looked at another sheep whilst on the lead or near the owner, but he repeated it again whilst out. Hence he is here no more, not worth the risk/fines/prosecution !

When I was growing up near Rye in E.Sussex, I used to help on a farm lambing, they had a stock worrying German Sheperd turn up, was shot by the landowner and the dogs owner was fined heavily and had to pay for the ewe and lambs.. Just not worth it..

Thanks for some good comments and sujestions...but she is no longer with me,im not going to be worried sick everytime she is out of my sight and either would i be held responsible if she took hold of a ewe when the other lads dogs are with her, thats a selfish thing to do on my behalf, that wont be 1 dog gone but several..we will not take the chance, and she knows damm well the differance between a rabbit/fox/hare and sheep weather its black white or any other colour...and has for work she had seen from jan - march prob 15 16 good kills day and night...like i said thanks for the comments and advice but im not running the risk
