what age to retire a lurcher

i have an eight year old collie greyhound my first choice to bring when i go lamping he starting to slow down a bit but he is still catching plenty of game i think i will still get 2 or 3 more seasons from him and then a few more ferreting and bushing with the terriers but i'd like to know the average age most people will stop lamping and coursing their lurchers i reckon he would die younger if i stoped working him

as long as can still run without any pain,what i have done with my dogs have been young is give them pure horse codliver oil for their bones ,if it was to give a least 1 season more out of my dogs it will have worth while

i hunted my old 3/4 till she was 11 years old.she was putting some of the younger dogs to shame.then some dirty b*****d poisoned her.my only regret was that i never bread of her.she was a good all rounder

i still run an 8 year old and a 10 year old both are still invaluble lack pace but do the job at the end experiance counts it aint all about speed.

i still work my 8 yeard colliexhound and he still producrs the good pal ,might take a wee bit longer to heal though

nice one lads i have always thought that i will run him till he cant any more but im sick of SOME PEOPLE telling me that i will be lucky to get this season from him just because of his age and truthfuly he has made dirt of some peoples dogs out in the feilds weather it be in the day or nightand i rather he died doing what he does rather than waisting in the pen for a couple of years

my dad had a hlaf collie x and she was still working at 11 and putin younger dogs to shame she was killed never got the chance 2 retire her

my mates dog is 10 & still getting the odd thing or two, its always nice to keep them doing there job as long as possible.

 

you not thinking about getting a new pup, if so your old one could help bring it on as its experianced.

Could have more years left than you think, not working maybe, but I've come across two very long lived lurchers in my time, one died age 26 the other 28! Unbelievable I know but there it is.

got a collie x at home .think she is 12 years old ..out every day mooching about

 

can still turn it on when needed , dont brake any records but shes fit and healthy .

 

so i see no reason to stop her .

i think it just depends how hard off a runing life they have i have a bitch 9 years old and shes been retierd 2 year now.shes earnd her retirement and been a great bitch.think its diferent for every dog

i had him out lamping last night he got 6 rabbits and a young dog fox and he is now bouncing around pen wanting to go out for his morning walk i know he has plenty more in him i just started this tread to shut a couple of certain people up. nice one lads i'l be serving some humble pie to them later.
