Sloes are looking good if you can find them but a lot of people wait for a frost before picking then which gives you time to find them first. Where I live they are like gold dust and people keep there patch close to there chests. Lots of tasy things to be made with the blackberries and sloe gin and vodka is one of life's great joys you will be glad to hear that there are loads of sloe bushes around my way,nobody seems to bother with them,all the more for me:thumbs: will be collecting them soon for the sloe gin/vodka. This will be my 3rd year to make it,last year i made 15 bottles, have you ever tried it with almond essence instead of sugar? Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I usually put a few drops of almond essence in as well as the sugar, takes the edge off. Gorgeous with blue cheeses and nettle crackers mmm mouth watering. Still haven't had the first frost here yet though so giving it a bit longer before picking. How about leaves and salady things this time of year, any left or will they all have died off? Got a challenge to create a free meal in late October with access to trout and salmon, rabbit, venison, but not much to put with them, think I'll have my work cut out for that but looking forward to it! savaloy 1 Posted September 29, 2010 Report Share Posted September 29, 2010 I have just last week picked 20lb plus of damsons & have now got 5 gallon of damson wine on the go. i have also found a group of giant puffballs, about a dozen growing, have had one sliced up with cheese on done like cheese on toast & i have fried the others with bacon & courgettes. If your a hardcore forager then acorns for coffee but i wouldnt advise. I tried some and next time i will just put a spoon of mud in the cup, it will probably taste nicer.
