tinytiger 854
lets say if you had a bitch out realy good lines and she fails.Would you use a realy good working dog over and see what you get ? no ,id take her out of the genepool altogether ,one way or an other. http://chla.library.cornell.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=chla;cc=chla;rgn=full%20text;idno=3133276;didno=3133276;view=image;seq=22;node=3133276%3A7;page=root;size=s;frm=frameset; Heres a link to a good book that tells you why, once vital genes have been lost from an individual within a breed they arent going to fall out of the sky and appear in her litter.Maybe if the dog is a super worker then you might be o.k but the dirt is sure to come out eventually. It does even when you breed best to best. It could be succesful if all other is compatible. I know some examples in APBT-breeding. But generally, ...don't do it. Quote Link to post

Hagen 11
sounds like you would breed from untested terriers, what do you keep and are they working earth dogs ? I'm a rookie in earth dogs. I have 3 Patterdale prospects. One is a 100% Nuttall from the old stuff. One is from Nuttall x Pickaxe ancestors. One from Nuttall x G.Mason x Gould ancestors. This season will be my first. Before I have had APBTs since 1982. Quote Link to post

I know nobody who is able to make more money with dogs than with work. Add the time together that you have to spend for the dogs, and subtract the costs for food, kennel, vet, .... , from the money you have earned. What do you think is your clear profit per hour? cdnhastings 23
I want to hear about hybrid vigour, associated with first generation outcross breeding. I am for best to best, not always by breed or type. Its all a gamble really isn't it? I'm saying I'm okay stepping up to the best to best outcross gambling table and playing those odds. maybe I'm nieve (is that how you spell it? Im not saying i go out and look intentionally for outcrossed terriers , but if one came across my path from proven workers that i have seen work (both of em) than i think id find the kennel space to give the pup a home. Hybrid vigour is only short term mate ,meaning it applies to the present and not the future, best to aim for traits that are bred in generation after generation .Two closely relayed types however are perfect and will set genes for the long term .I wouldnt turn down a good pup either mate but breeding it would be a different thing altogether. Its the same with all genes 2 litter brothers one works good he has the genes, if the other doesnt work good he doesnt carry the genes same with bitches if not passed directly they wont filter through Quote Link to post
