treetree 0
Hello all, I've just rehomed a Jack Russell X fell from a local dogs home, who I have finally managed to get down to a good weight and is looking in decent shape. Not sure the previous owners knew much about terriers, as I believe their idea of taking their dog out was parking up at the local park to throw a ball for him to fetch. As a result, the dog is obsessed with fetching his ball back and forth. He behaves nothing like a terrier should when out for walks. I'm not interested in sticking him down holes, but it would at least be nice to see him bushing for rabbits and behaving in a way he has been bred to. So my question is this; how do I up his prey drive, and release the terrier within (and lose his obsession with his ball in the process). Many thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have. Rik 49
I had a JRT that was obsessed with any ball,I got her at 6wks old had all the jabs and started taking her out rabbiting/rating,she killed a few rats bolted a few rabbits, but as soon as we got home she went to look for her ball, walked around with it in her mouth all the time, she is now a year old and and living with my mum still chasing balls and sleeping at the foot of my mums bed it would rather do that then hunt, but if you where to hide her ball she would hunt for hrs till she found it Thats just what she prefers, and that dog was supposedly from working parants just shows you never know what your buying off people you dont know £200 for a bag of shit, bit wiser now good luck with it your going to need it Quote Link to post

I use my plummers to bush rabbits for greyhound saplings and they have them sent cracked(i use them for digging too).Your dog is bound to get caught up in the excitement eventually. Ideation 8,216
Move her on to playing with a rabbit skin over a dummy, then possibly chuck a dead rabbit about for her and then take her where there are plenty of rabbits and see what happens. Quote Link to post

Do you not know that chasing and retrieving a ball-or anything, is using the dogs hunting instinct? And blaming the breeder for this "fault"!!! She will HUNT a ball for hours-a very short step to becoming a good rat/rabbit hunting dog IMO.  Try golf. Edited September 28, 2010 by stormyboy Quote Link to post
