ive no fear of cattle in general, my brother in law has a farm with pedigree charolais, sheep and bullocks and ive spent the last few years helping feed them, clean out sheds, assisting with de-horning, have a basic knowledge of useing a calving jack, bottle feeding calves etc etc. i would only be particularly cautious if the was a strange/new bull in the field or a bull was in a field/pen on his own or a cow had recently calved (can be very dangerous) and im cautious of limousin cattle especially crossbreds (highly strung) and any cattle that havent been dehorned for obvious reasons. fortunately round here news spreads quickly about bulls of dubious temperaments, a neighbour whos land i hunt on had a very dangerous bull. we used to find out what field he was in prior to hunting every single time. he only got the bullet after he nearly killed his owner.

I was out with the dogslast summer near my parent's place in Borrowdale. It was hot and I had a swim in the beck and then laid on the grass for a bit. I woke up surrounded by cows and calves staring down at me. The dogs had abandoned me and were sitting on the opposite bank. :icon_eek:

See in your post where you said you worked with cows.... see the bit you wouldn't go into a field with a bull you didn't know? Breaking news here.... They are all strangers to me lol, don't know any cows or bulls... :tongue2:

no i said any bull i didnt know

and any cow with newborn calf at foot as their hormones send them mental

and im cautious of non pedigree + crossbred limousins as many of them are flighty and ive seen them jump 5ft fences en masse. insane breed of cattle but the pedigree limousins seem to be a bit saner.

common breeds that are docile in general;

freisian;- black + white, red + white dairy cow, tall + boney

belgian blue;- meat breed, often blue but come in many colours, look like they are on steroids

charolais;- meat breed, big + cream colour

aberdeen angus;- meat breed, black no horns, no white markings

hereford;- dark red cow with white face

simmentals;- similar to the hereford

dexter;- dwarf breed, black, dual purpose

less docile breeds,

limousin;- ginger-red meat cow, dual purpose

jersey;- bulls of this breed are particularly ill-tempered very pretty small dairy breed, long eyelashes, cream-fawn colour

Out walking a year ago with the bull terrier,who interestingly dreads cows.Well some young heffers began to chase the mutt around the field,I am not in the least bit nervy around cattle and am usually the 1st to check out if the bull in the next field is calm or not.So after a few laps of the field the dog decides to run back to Daddy(thats me),he runs past me and I turn to stop the ever nearing cattle but I left it a tad too late,the first cow swerved and missed me and I jumped into the path of another and recieved a ferocious head butt into the back from bovine no.2.I was down and out for a minute or so and couldnt catch my breath.I scrambled to my knees as I knew if I didnt I was maybe in trouble.I staggered over to the ditch and onto the road.I was well banged up I have to say,unable to catch my breath and like a knife through my back with the pain.I found the dog hiding under the car and if I were capable I could have choked the bloody coward.Took me a week or so to come right after it.I still have no fear of cattle but watch with a little more care these days,Ive always avoided cows with calves,your only asking for trouble geting between a new born baby and its mother.They charge like nutters but after the initial run they just go around you and then give you that vacant stare,stupid animals that they are.
