I have issues with cows. I don't like to walk in fields with cows, it's like a phobia :icon_redface: However, I'm trying to overcome that since avoiding cows is really limiting my mooches. Last week I managed just fine, with some cows up the top of a field and myself and the mutts scooting past across the middle  I was all proud of myself till today.

I went over a stile on a public footpath, down a little track, and was suddenly faced with a whole whack of cows. The calves took umbrance to my passing them and started darting around, alerting all the big 'uns to my presence. Then all the cows turned to face me, balefully glaring at me, slowing munching their cuds like they were collectively deciding weather to trample me to death, or gleefully gore me. I'm sure they discuss these things telepathically. They give me the creeps. In the end I had to turn around, back over the stile and ended up going a long and boring way back home.

So my questions are: does anyone else avoid cows, and why? Is it smarter to steer clear of them or is it just the city girl in me who finds cows menacing?

FFS wumin! Man up!

The worst they can do is trample you into the ground or throw you 15 ft in the air.

It is advisable to keep out of their road if you have a dog with you.

Dairy cows are normally safe, as are calves.

Its bullocks and heifers you should avoid if at all possible.

I used to work on a farm so I've had a few experiences.

At the end of the day if you don't feel safe around them you probably aren't.

If your walking through them, have an easy escape plan(walk along the fence) but don't allow yourself to be cornered by them.

The things we do for a laugh!

I am also petrified of cows. A few years ago i was going fishing at about midnight. Me and my mate were walking across a field when we both suddenly stopped and just stared forward. Next thing we heard this rumbling noise. We were both just stood looking forward trying to work out what was going on. Next thing a herd of cows came tearing through a gate way and started running straight at us. We both legged it and got to a wood just in time as they was right on our arses. Its the most scary thing i have ever experienced in my life. Its lucky that we both just stopped when we did like we knew something wasnt right. My mate sort of went into shock afterwards. He was silent all the way driving home just ocassional "f****n ell" was all i heard from him. Ive never liked cows since and i avoid them like the plague.

I'm very wary of cows.. When I was 14, I was surrounded by about 30 bullocks for about an hour when walking our old spaniel along a footpath. :( It took me ages to summon up the courage to shoo them away.

I'm not so bad now, but they still get to me. If it looks like you're about to be surrounded when you've got your dogs on a lead, let the dogs off the leads. Dog walkers can and do get trampled to death by heifers at certain times of the year. The cows want to get at the dogs, not the person. A dog can get out of the way more quickly if it's off the lead.

Once when I was out lamping alone I found myself within spitting distance of a bull - not that I spit, very unladylike - and I couldn't clear out of there quick enough. I ended up going miles out of my way so I wouldn't have to go over the fence there ... the calves and cows were all lined up near the fence, staring at me in the darkness. Blech.

Himself says I'm being a sissy and can't understand why I'm so twitchy around cows. So of course I'm trying not to be. Failed miserably today tho. I tried to force myself past them and over a gate but my feet turned me around all by themselves

Feel daft bringing this up but since everyone else is sharing therefears, I thought I'd share mine..... The phobia started when I was only 3, too young to remember but I still have the fear. As far as i am aware I was being walked through a field by my aunt and we stopped next to a small bush (think she needed to relieve herself) While she was crouched the other side of the bush, I was thrown to the ground and ragged about for a good 30 seconds!!! I know it sounds strange but it wasn't by a cow, it was with a lamb!!! :icon_eek:

Fkn terrified of them now..... can't even go down the raw meat section in ASDA!!!

Sorry but ...

It's not so bad if the field is a big one and they're busy elsewhere and don't take much notice of me. I find I'm more comfortable in large areas. But they had me cornered today. Sure they would've disposed of me quick smart if I'd taken another step forward. I turned my head to eyeball the gate, see if maybe I could get to that and over fast enough but when I looked back they'd all turned their heads to see what I was looking at - then they looked back at me as if to say 'go on, dare you to try'.

Hateful creatures.

However, when they fix you with that blank bovine stare, well ... they ain't so gorgeous then

its not so bad when they are staring at you from eye level...... its when they are looking down at you, you need to worry.......

I was out with the dogslast summer near my parent's place in Borrowdale. It was hot and I had a swim in the beck and then laid on the grass for a bit. I woke up surrounded by cows and calves staring down at me. The dogs had abandoned me and were sitting on the opposite bank. :icon_eek:
