trinman 0
i recently was looking at breeds of dog that would suit my needs and the deerhound was one that stood out to me. i know they are great chasers which is what i want but i also want a capable retriever with a soft mouth and webbed feet. also, good with kids. labradors are too slow and the german pointers i've worked with just don't match my temperament. i want a dog to run with and hunting for deer, turkey, rabbits, antelope and even quail, pheasant, duck and geese. i need to know if this dog will make the cut Quote Link to post
Guest chook
Your looking at the wrong type to do everything - sorry. A deerhound if your lucky might do deer and rabbits for you but birds - more likily not, most wont swim at all, my bitch will only go up to her knee's in water. They are verry good with kids, my bitch loves kids retriving - can be hard work, mine used to, but now dosent see the point lol they dont mature till there at least 3, and you cant realy do much with them till there at least 2 as it can damage there joints. There is someone on hear that does work deerhounds, cant remember his user name though but if you do a search for deerhounds, you should be able to find him Doxhope is another one, worth speaking to - he's got a book out and has loads of info on working deerhounds. http://www.doxhopedeerhounds.co.uk/workingdeerhounds.htm Quote Link to post
Dux 5
Deutsch Drahthaar will do all that and more. http://vdd-gna.org/ Quote Link to post
Helen 2
I would say NO lovely dogs but a bird retriever, mine sometimes retrieves as long as something more interesting dosn't come along or he fancies a run. He turns like a tanker and won't go near water. Oh I forgot when he was faced with a rabbit he heaved and walked off!! I have heard Doxhope are good workers. my experience of show line is you can forget it, sure there will be an exception somewhere, just with it was mine! Quote Link to post

Will hunt anything..well at least the ones Ive used would..maybe better with a deerhound cross though Quote Link to post
blackpack 70
my deerhound x will hunt anything, and if lucky will retrieve feather, and for the size is pretty sound on the bunnies, very trustworthy with kids Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
For the bird and retrieving side of things you might try one of these http://www.redhuntingpoodles.com/ Can't really see one running a deer, mind Quote Link to post

Helens right, forget most deerhounds from show lines..My deerhounds would face lions, and one of my dogs had a particular hatered of Alsations, used to throw the guard dog from a local scrap year all over the place if he got half a chance. Theres an injection that can help anyones deerhound that performs as Helen suggests, its cheap and made of lead and the effects last a long, long time Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
How about a lab based lurcher? a 3/4 bred could well do reasonable at most of what you want. Likely common as hens teeth in USA though. Get a greyhound over one of you labs then another over on of the 1st cross as to start breeding your own might be the only way. Quote Link to post

I'm not tryin to start trouble but by the time that you got a lab based lurcher any good on our deer there would be about 1/32nd lab in it. Maybe different in other parts of the states but where I live, you best have a dog that can run cuz you aint gonna catch a damn thing without it. I assume its that way everywhere though. Wish I had one of yours. e Quote Link to post

Dan I'm curious to know what you'd recommend to the OP? I don't think a lot of folks on here have experience of the terrain, and types of dogs used on it, in the US. Is there a type that feel would be useful for the work mentioned? 'Cause it seems a rather tall order for one dog. Quote Link to post
