Midge learning fast!

Recommended Posts

Took my first serious ferreting trip of the season yesterday. Me and a couple of mates went planning to longnet some busy hedgerows and let my jrtxwhippet, Parker, show my friends pup the ropes.

It didnt start very well, wind was blowing a gale and the cover was very thick. We did one set and the rabbits were just not bolting. I think the ferrets killed at least once but the mark was 16 foot plus in the bottom of the hedge were you could only lie down - im keen but not that keen! We finally bolted one into the longnet and my jill followerd it out looking battered.

Basically we gave up on the plan and the longnets and moved to some small buries on a river bank with just the dogs, ferts and a spade. First bury, instant bolt both dogs ran it but the puppy Midge, beddywhippetgreyxbeddywhippetgrey, has certainly got the legs of Parker. She scooped it out from under his nose after a lovely run! This happened again on the next one, then they missed one, then Parker caught one by the tail just as it went to ground but ended up losing the rabbit but keeping its tail! Midge ran one more and missed before she and my mate had to leave to go to work.

My other friend and i carried on and got the tailless one, needless to say it wouldnt bolt and the ferrets killed it at about 2 foot. On the way back Parker marked and nailed one laying up above ground which turned out to have the first stages of mixy which is sad to see.

We ended the day with five in the bag and had some cracking sport and a thoroughly successful introduction the ferreting for midge! Poor old Parker was not too impressed at being outrun by her but im sure he has a few more tricks up his sleeve! Photos to follw as i've got to get to work!

looks hard ferreting mate,nice piccs.

hows the lurcher doing?

will she be up and running soon?

lofti.

Thanks lofti, the hedgerow was a nightmare, just too early in the year but the river bank was good. Its about the only place i have access to were you can bolt to the digs and get a half decent chance of catching. Most of my ground is thick hedges, woods or other places not ideal for the dogs so its nice to have a change.

My bitch is recovering from the latest in a long catalogue of disasters. She was just coming back from a toe amputation and tore a shoulder muscle :wallbash: She is pretty much healed, i just need to start getting her fit and try not to let her break herself again!

One day i might actually be able to get her out working again!
