whin 463
the mag its self aint bad but its not a mag for hunting dog men realy ,and if peoppe need to be shown to enter a dog into the game there not been out enough with there peers ,or made enough mistakes to learn , to me books in a hole are repetitive ,about dog work trainig dogs etc ,and more so most of the writers as when there writing there guys out doing it ,if som eof us were to write about everydays hunt well you would need a telephone book or some apostage stamp ed rd was agreat old maf the early reads in shooting news were decent but alot now is pure shows this shows that amillion miles from the real life of hunting Quote Link to post
Borat 8
Fair play to you Skycat for your replys on here, I understand where your coming from but the truth of the matter is that the CMW is, as a whole and I'm sorry to say, absolute crap! The mag suffered greatly when Plummer got his grubby paws on it and subsiquent editors have kept up his 'ideal' since! Whenever I read the mag it's as if the old scrote is still at the helm. The CMW ever tries to distance itself from the 'reality' of genuine working dogs in the field. Just as Plummer did! It tries it's hardest to steer well clear of anyone who might upsett the 'bridge' it forever tries to build with the real hunting, shooting set, people who will forever read Horse & Hound etc but the CMW will always 'try' to appeal to those it ain't got a cat's chance in hell of adding to the mailing list! Forever crafty though, it knows just who its buyers are and posts, 'in the main', soppy wet Terrier & Lurcher articles, to keep the buyer buying, i'm realistic to fully understand the current climate and know full well the need for discresion but the CMW really is on another planet altogether! The shining example of this was it's apathy to bull bred lurchers for many years but eventualy had to turn full circle when bull bloods became its buyers main choice of dog! I'd like to think it would turn around but I very much doubt that would be from better articles being submitted, i'd put money they'd still turn 'em down but hit 'em where it hurts, in the pocket, don't buy it and maybe like they did with bull bloods, they may start to listen! I like this post.. Plummer was a bit of a Walter Mittie.. The late Kieth Erlandsen of the gundog training fame (and regular writer in Shooting Times) caught Mr Plum out on a number of occasions.. I used to enjoy reading there love letters to each in CMW.. Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
I don't agree with Whin about this. In the early days of the "Shooting News" there were far more articles for the dog and ferret crowd. "Pesters Pen", "Lloyd on lurchers" ,"The Warrener","Dargi" etc. and of course Brian Plummer had a few articles in there. Whether or not you agreed with peoples opinions it was always interesting to hear them. One of my favourites of all time was Phil Lloyds discussion with "PC Alec Brown" about travellers. Anyone remember that? I don't buy it these days as there're only ever two or at most three articles I'd even read and Penny's are usually the only good ones. I was being sarcastic about Penny taylor.I want to read about hard run match dogs, grafting terreirs, and storys from fellas who lamp heaps of rabbits a good few nights a week. not someone who " Dont like to hear that" when a terreir and a fox are mixing it below. as i was told by a fella who went out with her once. So you like to hear your dog getting smashed to bits do you? I don't need to come on like some big machiso hard dog man: after all I'm just a woman. LOL I don't have to big it up and be hard and act like I don't care about my dogs: but I have worked my dogs on all game for many years, and I'll carry on doing it because I love the work. Even though I don't like them getting smashed up I still admire their guts, determination etc etc, and I'll keep patching them up, treating them when injured, then take them out again. It's part of what all hunters do, and I know that injuries happen to both lurchers and terriers when they're working, maybe I'm just a bit more honest about what I feel: like I said, I've nothing to prove one way or another. And yes, wouldn't it be great if I could write about things as they happen, exactly and true to life, but they wouldn't print those articles, still less publish photos of terriers on foxes: its even difficult to get them to put a photo in of a dead fox and a terrier in the same photo! Sadly, this is the world we live in nowadays: haven't you noticed that even Harcombe is careful about the sort of photos he puts in EDRD nowadays? If I wrote about what I did with my dogs I wouldn't be sitting here now would I? I'd no doubt be in the same situation as some of the numpties who have bragged about what they do and have now had their computers and dogs taken away by the police. When you write articles you don't expect everyone to like what you write, and the only way I can get away with writing about coursing or dogs actually killing foxes is to put it in under the heading of Memory Lane. Even then I have to be very careful about the exact words I use. But I'll carry on doing it a while yet because even though I have to be politically correct, at least the newbies, non hunters etc who buy the magazine, can get to read about how activities which are now banned: for example: how a good foxing lurcher is capable of killing a fox in seconds, as opposed to the possibly lengthy death from a bad gun shot wound. Not that I have anything against shooters, just the ones which wound a fox and don't care about how long it takes to die of gangrene or starvation because its bottom jaw has been blown away. You can't please everyone all of the time, but if you want to read articles like you said, then why not write them yourself? Send them into EDRD. And I'd write for EDRD but it would seem that they think I'm obviously a 'theorist' I doubt they'd believe what I do with my dogs anyway LOL LOL And yes, I do buy EDRD, think its a great magazine. I do disagree with Harcombe on one thing though: he reckons his readers wouldn't want to read about dog care, but the number of posts on sites like this seems to tell a different story. From what I see on here theres scores of people asking for help and advice on injuries all the time. Just a thought. Do you write for the CMW? Just from your ramblings you seem to fit the stereotype of writers they use? Just curious I know who you are now & have read several of your "works", no offence but your type of articles are the same repetitive bullshit that that is written, in various forms week in, week out & forced my decision to stop wasting my money buying the CMW. I'm sure once you've wrote enough pointless articles I'm think you'll be filling a book with them, like I said you fit the stereotype. 1 Quote Link to post
Mars 42
im new to the lurcher scene and dont yet own any lurchers as i wanted to do my homework on breeds, training quarry etc before jumping in head first and i bought cmw as an aid for this but after reading this thread im not sure i have done myself any good is there any other magazines or sites i can buy or use to help improve my knowlage and pick up tips, cheers ingram Well if i was you i would`nt belive half the bullshit you read on here either... As for the countrymans weekly, Yes it was a better mag when it was Shooting news, but then it did`nt have the restraints of todays hunting regulations And although i enjoy reading about a lurchers day/night out or a days ratting by this or that terrier, you can only read so many accounts of a day out with the dogs before it all becomes repetative.. I for one like to read about other forms of hunting or pest control Also as i dont do any hunting during the summer months the C/weekly has a good list of shows going on around the country, Good luck to anyone that writes in it, as it cant be easy in these politicly correct times... Yis Mars... Quote Link to post
