Do you write for the CMW? Just from your ramblings you seem to fit the stereotype of writers they use? Just curious

The stories get edited and summarized to become very PC. It's not easy to get your true account of events across. It's very frustrating.   Well said Skycat.

i have been out with penny before and plan to a few times this year, she has been a sound reference to go to on all matters conserning dogs. you have to realise that the law has changed and if you lik

It would be better if someone actually sat down and wrote a good instructional book on how to train and enter a lurcher: any takers?

Did'nt D.Brian Plummber write a "great book" called The Secrets Of Dog Training ? ..

And that's another problem: I've done no end of training pup articles, how to introduce dogs to ferreting, lamping etc. I know that there are new people buying the mag now who weren't buying it a few years ago, but how long do you leave it before doing yet another training article? I can only imagine the slagging off I'd get if I kept repeating myself to that extent! There's only so many times you can tell people how to teach a pup to retrieve, sit, stay etc.

And as far as certain writers go, well, lets just say that if more experienced people with real experience wrote in then they wouldn't be scratching about putting in stuff from people who have obviously had very little experience, would they.

i thought your reply article to mr hall about the young lurcher training was very well put!atb

I don't agree with Whin about this. In the early days of the "Shooting News" there were far more articles for the dog and ferret crowd. "Pesters Pen", "Lloyd on lurchers" ,"The Warrener","Dargi" etc. and of course Brian Plummer had a few articles in there. Whether or not you agreed with peoples opinions it was always interesting to hear them. One of my favourites of all time was Phil Lloyds discussion with "PC Alec Brown" about travellers. Anyone remember that?

I don't buy it these days as there're only ever two or at most three articles I'd even read and Penny's are usually the only good ones.

I was being sarcastic about Penny taylor.

I want to read about hard run match dogs, grafting terreirs, and storys from fellas who lamp heaps of rabbits a good few nights a week. not someone who " Dont like to hear that" when a terreir and a fox are mixing it below. as i was told by a fella who went out with her once.

So you like to hear your dog getting smashed to bits do you? I don't need to come on like some big machiso hard dog man: after all I'm just a woman. LOL I don't have to big it up and be hard and act like I don't care about my dogs: but I have worked my dogs on all game for many years, and I'll carry on doing it because I love the work. Even though I don't like them getting smashed up I still admire their guts, determination etc etc, and I'll keep patching them up, treating them when injured, then take them out again. It's part of what all hunters do, and I know that injuries happen to both lurchers and terriers when they're working, maybe I'm just a bit more honest about what I feel: like I said, I've nothing to prove one way or another.

And yes, wouldn't it be great if I could write about things as they happen, exactly and true to life, but they wouldn't print those articles, still less publish photos of terriers on foxes: its even difficult to get them to put a photo in of a dead fox and a terrier in the same photo! Sadly, this is the world we live in nowadays: haven't you noticed that even Harcombe is careful about the sort of photos he puts in EDRD nowadays?

If I wrote about what I did with my dogs I wouldn't be sitting here now would I? I'd no doubt be in the same situation as some of the numpties who have bragged about what they do and have now had their computers and dogs taken away by the police.

When you write articles you don't expect everyone to like what you write, and the only way I can get away with writing about coursing or dogs actually killing foxes is to put it in under the heading of Memory Lane. Even then I have to be very careful about the exact words I use. But I'll carry on doing it a while yet because even though I have to be politically correct, at least the newbies, non hunters etc who buy the magazine, can get to read about how activities which are now banned: for example: how a good foxing lurcher is capable of killing a fox in seconds, as opposed to the possibly lengthy death from a bad gun shot wound. Not that I have anything against shooters, just the ones which wound a fox and don't care about how long it takes to die of gangrene or starvation because its bottom jaw has been blown away.

You can't please everyone all of the time, but if you want to read articles like you said, then why not write them yourself? Send them into EDRD. And I'd write for EDRD but it would seem that they think I'm obviously a 'theorist' I doubt they'd believe what I do with my dogs anyway LOL LOL And yes, I do buy EDRD, think its a great magazine.

I do disagree with Harcombe on one thing though: he reckons his readers wouldn't want to read about dog care, but the number of posts on sites like this seems to tell a different story. From what I see on here theres scores of people asking for help and advice on injuries all the time. Just a thought.

i didnt say anything about blood n gore and as far as im aware rabbiting with dogs is still legal isnt it so why would it be hard to show relevant pics to those articles ?pictures of the actual dog thats being talked about would be a start instead of pics of dogs that have prob been dead for years in all honesty ,and this isnt about one individual writer penny /skycat so dont take it personaly its about the paper in general theres more adverts than decent articles on running dogs and in my opinion edrd is more terriers and digging than running dogs i would love to see a paper or mag just for running dogs doubt it will ever happen though shame

Matty: I've only ever sent in photos of my own dogs with articles, terriers and lurchers (apart from if I'm talking about someone else's dog or breed of dog) The dogs I write about in the Memory Lane articles are also usually the right dogs for the article, even if the photo has been scanned into my computer from old photos. Not many of them I'll admit as I never had a camera in the old days and its almost impossible to take good pics if your'e actually handling a dog or ferret in the field, besides which it doesn't do a camera much good to be out in the pouring rain, muddy dykes or whatever.

However, a lot of writers don't send in photos with their articles so the editors have to put in photos from their library stock of photos, many of which are being taken all the time, as in this year, and sent in by field photographers who go out with ferreters etc. But they won't be pics of the actual dogs/ferrets/rabbits etc which are being written about in that article.

I for one wouldn't want a stranger coming out with us digging for example, and taking photographs: recipe for huge problems don't you think! So all you'll get from me is maybe a posed EOD shot if the article is about fox control.

Yes, I'd like to see more articles about running dogs in both mags, but both can only print what is sent in AND if it is of good enough quality. The CMW tell me they DO get articles sent in, but if they have to spend hours cutting/editing it to fit into the space available then it isn't worth their while. The grammar doesn't have to be 100% perfect, but it must at least be a decent readable account of a day's hunting or whatever.

I've already done it for one person and I'll gladly do it again: if someone wants to write an article please do, then send it to me and I'll tell you if its what the CMW will print. I'm not being up my own backside, its just that I've done this for a few years now and know what is acceptable or not to them. I also helped someone edit their first article so they knew what to do in the future, and they're now sending in their own articles from time to time and getting them published.

It would be great to have more hands on articles written by fellow hunters so give it a go!

Re the advertising: look at any over the counter magazine nowadays: advertising is what pays for the printing and is what allows them to put any articles in at all: just the way of the world these days. Look at TV: there's only the BBC which don't have adverts every 15 minutes or so, and that's cos of the TV licence fee.

There's no getting around adverts I'm afraid.

as i said before this is not a dig at anyone indidual i just think as a whole the paper has gone stale so to speak for want of better expression.and if your only interested in running dogs it works out at about a quid an article and about half hours reading not really value for money and if their scraping around why not publish every fortnight or month instead im passionate about all countrysports like most but havnt the vocabulary skills needed or most importantly the knowledge ive only had working dogs for just over 20 yrs which in my eyes is a novice ive a lot to learn and will probably be still learning in another 20 yrs time (if im still breathing)but there must be some some good genuinely knowledgeable fellas and women out there come on put pen to paper

Fair play to you Skycat for your replys on here, I understand where your coming from but the truth of the matter is that the CMW is, as a whole and I'm sorry to say, absolute crap!

The mag suffered greatly when Plummer got his grubby paws on it and subsiquent editors have kept up his 'ideal' since! Whenever I read the mag it's as if the old scrote is still at the helm. The CMW ever tries to distance itself from the 'reality' of genuine working dogs in the field. Just as Plummer did!

It tries it's hardest to steer well clear of anyone who might upsett the 'bridge' it forever tries to build with the real hunting, shooting set, people who will forever read Horse & Hound etc but the CMW will always 'try' to appeal to those it ain't got a cat's chance in hell of adding to the mailing list!

Forever crafty though, it knows just who its buyers are and posts, 'in the main', soppy wet Terrier & Lurcher articles, to keep the buyer buying, i'm realistic to fully understand the current climate and know full well the need for discresion but the CMW really is on another planet altogether! The shining example of this was it's apathy to bull bred lurchers for many years but eventualy had to turn full circle when bull bloods became its buyers main choice of dog!

I'd like to think it would turn around but I very much doubt that would be from better articles being submitted, i'd put money they'd still turn 'em down but hit 'em where it hurts, in the pocket, don't buy it and maybe like they did with bull bloods, they may start to listen!

as a lot have said it isnt up to much .ime being polite here but dont blame the writers whose hands are tied in what they can write about.going back to skycat penny taylor i have hunted quite a bit with her and believe me when i say she lives the life and walks the walk . her dogs can work along side the best and willnot be outshone or discraced .why is it that people who do not know someone make assumptions about other people and their dogs when they havnt got a clue .ime not alone on this site in being the only one that has been hunting coursing with penny and its funny how we all feel the same she is someone who works her dogs hard and brings out the best in them and boys i dont mean on just bunnies .
