lurchermania 25
well welcome mate and there isnt a better place to learn for m on than here you will find some members a lot more factual than others and it is often a good idea to get a few peoples thoughts (so the bullshitters stand out) before you put anything to practice. right where to begin.... you basicaly feed them what you prefer often from pups i use redmills racer as it has a good proteen percentage for a growing pup i also feed raw meat porrige and often a bit of milk but everyone varies in this department the point i realy would like to stress to you is there is many a top working dog out there what has never seen a bag of dogfood what cost more than a tenner..... the first year of your pups life should go realy on obedience and stock breaking the things your dog needs to know are sit, stay, fetch, jump, and it needs to be good with all other animals such as sheep catle horses and more importantly if your going out with your mates it has to be good with other dogs. then the real work will begin.... fitness is essential i often would say around 4 mile a day road walking , a further 4 beside the bike and as much free running as he can handle. if the dog is a pup you best go buy a ferret now and during the first year of obedience training (while your gaining ferreting permission and the farmers trust) the dog can pop along for a little bit of marking and the odd run hope this has helped mate anytjing else you wish to know pm me atb ( all the best ) Quote Link to post

matty73 4
welcome and congrats on first pup what x is it and how old is it if you can find out what it has been getting fed that is what i would use first as well as raw meat, lambs fat and meaty bones then gradually wean it onto whatever you want to feed it doesnt have to cost a fortune redmills racer is about 13 a bag and will feed average sized lurcher 2 to 3 weeks if your feeding meat as well longer in summer i switch gradually to sneyds and meat as they dont need as much protien but everyone is different in short mate as long as pup is getting what it needs nutrition wise how it gets it doesnt matter the best gauge for this is the dog itself a happy dog is a healthy dog .any questions would be better answered for you if we knew how old pup is mate Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
Not meaning to be rude or anything but i think you should of got the dog AFTER asking that question mate. Having said that, welcome aboard and if you have any other questions or needs for help dont hesitate to ask. Re the food: I feed raw meat and blended up veg sometimes with a drop of cod liver oil. Very hot topic is feeding, you will get a lot of tits pretending there way is the only way and that any other way is wrong etc etc. At the end of the day its what suits you and the dog. Re walking: Mine just accompany me on my daily 2 hour wander around the forest and 1 hours of the same in the evening. Re training: In a nut shell, DONT EVER GET ANGRY OR FRUSTRATED when the dog dont get it or seems to forget something she knows well and whenever they DO get something right PLENTY of praise. tsteve9999 456
There's a thread on here like this almost every week, FFS, why don't these people take a little while to actually learn something about the animal before shooting out and buying one?? No-one in their right mind would go out and buy a telly or car without knowing a thing about it, why on earth do people do it with a dog. You say you've been around lurchers for a long time, have you not learned anything from your mates, or asked them any questions at all? I have a bad feeling there is going to be yet another unwanted dog for sale in the near future, when the novelty wears off and the reality of having to walk him and feed him daily for the next 10 years or so sets in. KittleRox 2,147
welcome to the site.put plenty of time in training and be patient, read some books, don,t over excercise your pup while it is only young, wait until it is at least nine months old before you start hunting with your dog(entering).if you put the time in the pup will reward you.atb. johnny boy68 11,726
Hi young fella........welcome to the site The lad as got the dog now that can't be helped..........but we can help the lad and the dog by giving him some sound advise to make sure the dog dosen't end up as another unwanted lurcher. If your unsure about the basics you wouldn't go far wrong by getting purdys progress its a good little watch with some good sound advise about the basic training for a lurcher. Regarding food when its a pup which i assume it is try to feed it the best you can afford theres a farm shop near you in croespenmaen that sells everything.I've always given my pups beta pupppy its about £22 a sack but it as everything the pup needs.Theres probably a few cheaper variations out there but its always best to try and give them the best start. Best of luck young fella John Quote Link to post

hughesrobert13 0
thanks for those of you who have helped to everyone else i know how to feed and look after a dog as i have two other dogs that are very fit and healthy. i am not the type of person to give up on a dog i know i will only get out what i put into her. and i just want the best for her. to be honest some of my friends dont deserve dogs because i dont feel as though they look after them well enough that is why i am asking questions. i did learn some things from them but not a great deal so thats why i want to learn more. i dont want to ruin her so i want to know as much as i can. right shes 4 months old and her mum was 3\4 greyhound 1\4 bedlington and dad was 1/2 greyhound 1/2 whippet at the moment i am feeding her dr johns dog food mixed with tuna and also some tinned meat. before i bought her she was just fed scraps of meat. i have wormed and flead her and started basic commands sit and fetch so far. she is kept outside in a garage with another dog and she has the run of the garden all day. i walk her twice a day for 30 mins to an hour. she can be a little nervous around other dogs but soon starts playing with them she is very gentle and quiet and likes to sleep and chill out Quote Link to post
