Running off to other dogs

Recommended Posts

18mth old bitch bull x keeps running off to other dogs to play. It's getting past a joke now as she will do this from 2 fields away and will only come back when she's ready. Any advice welcomed please. Cheers ad.

I had months of this and tried everthing to stop mine doing the same. These are some of the things you can try. First bit of advice is get a dog whistle then try to walk your dog where or when their are no or few other dogs around for a time.

Start recall training from scratch first in the house or garden, call your dog with lots of enthusiasm and give two short pips of the whistle when it comes praise and give treats. Keep it up as often as you can you need to be aiming for 10 or more times a day but keep if fun for the dog. Try hiding and calling and plenty of praise don't get cross if it won't come try and coax it with treats or a favorate toy. Get treats your dog loves hot dogs are good cut up or make liver cake.

Don't get cross with your dog if it doesn't come back this is reason 1 for whistle training as it does not show emotion where as you screamming at your dog does. Would you want to go back to someone who was angy or stressed because of you.

If your dog does have a chance to go off to get it back you need to try and make yourself more exciting than the other dog get a squeeky toy, ball or rabbit skin on some tough string, act like a fool calling it with over enthusiasm, run away from it, hide from it, coax it, praise it when it does come.

Try and get a mate with a dog that will return when called to go out with you and find an enclosed field paddock or park. Try calling your dog with enthusiasm and the whistle, show it a toy or treats keep calling in a freindy almost stupid jolly way to make you more interesting than the other dog. If yours comes lots and lots of praise and treats. Do it again. If your doesn't get the other dog owner to call theirs in yours will follow so keep up the calling and good dog stuff. When your dog is near and the other is with its owner coax it in and lots of praise. Do it again.

Practice practice practice.

There is more but try this first.
