springer catching poult

Recommended Posts

as the title suggests i had my 16 month ess out at the weekend and he caught a young pheasant and pretty much gripped him very tightly i had to ring its neck as its back leg was shagged. Has anybody got any suggestions as to where to go from here. Also could this turn him hard mouthed or is that related to something else thanks in advance

Did it catch it taking off by any chance mate, sounds like it might have just grabbed the leg-hence the break? My dogs bring back plenty birds that manage to escape from my rearing field and 9 out of 10 times they are fine but on the odd occasion a leg or a wing gets broken, it cant be helped. If any of them bring back a dead bird or dying bird they know they have done wrong, but somehow in the season when they are picking up it doesnt affect them. I think they know what job they are out doing that day.

first time out?

only 16mths so excitement has got to him a little. dont stress about it to much yet. if you can get some cold game then get him on that just to calm him down a little.

i was worried about my lad when he first tried feather and he crushed the chest in. i left it for a little while and tried on pigeon. first couple he crushed but as soon as he realised there was another retrieve he soon switched.

it didn't stop him catch birds though. he caught a poult a few weeks back but release with no other problems.

chill with him and see how he goes.

I will pull back now for sure and see how we go with the cold game for a while thanks all
