Prey Drive

Recommended Posts

Some dogs are naturally highly driven.Seen some weird examples in the past but thats one of the reasons my dads terrier could never be taken near livestock even out in the van he wants to go for the cows when your driving past fields.he gets really frustrated and wound up about it but thats a terrier for you in for a penny in for a pound.

  thats not a true terrier just a over hyped dog thats not been trained properly!!! a proper terriers knows his job and sticks to it not a liabilty like yours

He didn't say that was a 'true' terrier. In answering this question he was saying his terrier had a 'ridiculously high, perhaps too high prey drive'. I agree with you in principal but as neither of us have ever met the dog, it's a bit rich to be slating it and him. You have no idea of the training or lack of that went in. If what you are saying is right - any terrier that has ever attacked or killed another dog, or a cat, or a chicken etc is not a proper terrier.

Got to disagree with you on that 1 mate and tend to side with stewie.....the terrier in question doesn't have a ridiculous prey drive it 100% hasn't been trained to a basic recall. Anybody that says (any type of dog by the way) the "dogs just mad" hasn't put the time into training it properly...

Ditto.

I'm not particularly defending this person or their dog but what the f**k do you lot know about the amount of training has gone into the dog? And my disagreement with stewie was his comment that 'a proper terrier knows his job and sticks to it' which is bollocks. Many do and many don't. 'Thats not a true terrier' - what is it then - a f*****g giraffe? 'The terrier in question doesn't have a high prey drive' . . . . . oh so you've met it then? And i agree with lab that most of the time 'dogs just mad' is an excuse for lack of training, but not all the time, some dogs DO just have a mad streak.

whys that then jai??? if your ratting round a farmyard with terriers what type of dog would you rather have jai?? a well trained well mannered dog that will use his "prey" drive to stick to there "prey" of just rats or a fecking liabilty fighting with dogs, killing the cats and chickens that are found on almost every farmyard in the country or locking on to any livestock it can get its teeth into??? to me "prey" drive is going all out 100% to kill the "prey" your targeting and ignoring everything else in the process

put it this way would you invite cold ethyl and her prey driven terrier for a days ratting in a milking parlour??? :hmm: :hmm:

You didnt ask and i didnt say what i would prefer. What i was arguing with was the 'true terrier' comment. It is most certainly a terrier, its just also a f*****g pain in the arse, especially for ratt

There are plenty of nutty digging dogs out there who are shit hot at their 'job' but if given the chance would moonlight as a right head case.

I have a really high prey drive dog he was bred to be that way, fine as long as I'm there just stays to heel screaming but what a liability and no sense of danger whatsoever. Last winter he cut his legs up running through ice on a pond after a duck, cut to ribbons still didn't stop him.
