Prey Drive

Recommended Posts

A couple of the early merlin & eve bred dogs i saw had unbelievable prey drive to the point of being ignorant to commands then again [bANNED TEXT] lurchers are just used as point and slip dogs instead of working free and been strictly trained to a reasonable standard is usualy the case.

You didnt ask and i didnt say what i would prefer. What i was arguing with was the 'true terrier' comment. It is most certainly a terrier, its just also a f*****g pain in the arse, especially for ratt

 thats not a true terrier just a over hyped dog thats not been trained properly!!! a proper terriers knows his job and sticks to it not a liabilty like yours

He didn't say that was a 'true' terrier. In answering this question he was saying his terrier had a 'ridiculously high, perhaps too high prey drive'. I agree with you in principal but as neither of us

Mates hare bitch(pre ban obviously) had unbelievable drive. Would go through anything to get her quarry making her a seriously good bitch with a excellent catch rate. Especially on ground where other dogs would struggle.

Unfortunately this also meant she was very prone to injury and was retired at quite a young age as a result.

Bitch was collie greyhound saluki whippet of some description.

What I would call a great dog.

the best lurcher i have ever owned had a massive prey drive and her litter of pups inherited this as well i would go as far as to say ive never seen a lurcher come near her for prey drive and ive had them all my life .she took all prey large and small it didnt matter what i ran her on she was 23tts but a heart like a lion even when the chips were down she was a timid bitch around other dogs but on any game only had one gear .she caught hares on the fens daytime and large stuff all over the country and never took a backward step in fact she was to brave for her own good when coursing on salisbury plain with her with a well known lurcherman he remarked he had never seen anything stay or with her heart that didnt have saluki in it. she was three quarter greyhound quarter american pit bull terrier.and as i said had massive massive prey drive and all she wanted to do was get to it as fast as possible and stuff the consequences.or pain to herself.dont think ime saying she was a coursing dog because she wasnt but she would catch hares daytime and any other quarry in the british isles she was excellent around stock other dogs and people but a habitual theif and would steal and eat anything . and i would love to have another with her prey drive .downside with her as there always is was the vets bills that come with owning a dog like this and the people that had pups off her all said the same thing .

my lakeland bitch will do absolutely anything to reach her quary and i do mean anything, the dog is an absolute pshyco....but once home she is my kids teddy bear! i dont think its anything to do with training just a want to kill or prey drive, she does my head in at times but she is the best dog i have ever owned so is it possible to have too much prey drive?i dont know the answer to that question maybe catch 22

Some dogs are naturally highly driven.Seen some weird examples in the past but thats one of the reasons my dads terrier could never be taken near livestock even out in the van he wants to go for the cows when your driving past fields.he gets really frustrated and wound up about it but thats a terrier for you in for a penny in for a pound.

He didn't say that was a 'true' terrier. In answering this question he was saying his terrier had a 'ridiculously high, perhaps too high prey drive'. I agree with you in principal but as neither of us have ever met the dog, it's a bit rich to be slating it and him. You have no idea of the training or lack of that went in. If what you are saying is right - any terrier that has ever attacked or killed another dog, or a cat, or a chicken etc is not a proper terrier.

Got to disagree with you on that 1 mate and tend to side with stewie.....the terrier in question doesn't have a ridiculous prey drive it 100% hasn't been trained to a basic recall. Anybody that says (any type of dog by the way) the "dogs just mad" hasn't put the time into training it properly...

Ditto.

had a few with big prey drive the hole line were like that you had to temper them and keep them in check even as oldies they still wanted it badly you know the ones with prey drive when there nettles and they go through them if there not there to get at there qaurry commited dogs ive saw them run back with rabits to get on to the next ,

my last lurcher had a very high prey drive, she would go through anything to catch her prey. my patt is the same, even manages to catch the magpies when they land in the dog run. he is male dog aggressive except with bitches but he would kill the neighbours oversized pomeranian if he could (dont blame him for that it does look quite a bit like a fox)

he did however have an encounter with a sheep and showed little interest

I'm not particularly defending this person or their dog but what the f**k do you lot know about the amount of training has gone into the dog? And my disagreement with stewie was his comment that 'a proper terrier knows his job and sticks to it' which is bollocks. Many do and many don't. 'Thats not a true terrier' - what is it then - a f*****g giraffe? 'The terrier in question doesn't have a high prey drive' . . . . . oh so you've met it then? And i agree with lab that most of the time 'dogs just mad' is an excuse for lack of training, but not all the time, some dogs DO just have a mad streak.

a good mate of mine and a member on here has a half cross bull grey, this dog is used for big game, round holes etc if you get my drift! His prey drive is emmense, lamping last season and after a long night and not much big stuff around and my bitch picking up all the bunnys, i persuaded him to run just one rabbit which of course he wasn't bred for and had never ran! I persuaded him to run one bunny and f**k me ive never seen a dog put so much effort and determination into a bunny, obviously i had seen him working bigger game and hes all the same but for the first bunny he was able to run. He hit the bunny flat out with one hell of a strike and rolled and rolled and rolled, as if he had hit a red un or a roe etc!
