Hi All

My FAC has arrived now and with open ticket well chuffed, I am looking for 17 HMR rifle, Going for a CZ American not quite decided on barrel length its between the 16" and 20" but the 16" is dearer for some reason,Any difference in killing range or are they similar also any comment on what ammo to go for quarry would be rabbit crow etc.

20 inch will give you a little extra velocity but i think that 16 is the norm now days. Shorter barrels are better out of vehicles etc.

In terms of ammo use whatever is the most accurate in YOUR barrel. Try a few brands at first and stick with the most accurate ones.

Sion - no offence intended here but I am a little uneasy. You have just two choices of bullet, 17gr fragmenting and 20gr expanding. The 17gr are lethal but destroy meat tissue. The 20gr are better if you're shooting for the pot.

I really do hope that you are not thinking in terms of shooting crows in trees? If you decoy them to the ground then 17gr are ideal. If you are after rabbits for the pot then you need headshots with either 17 or 20, but 20gr will be less destructive.

As I said, no offence intended.

I don't think the loss of 4" really makes that much practical difference, a longer barrel as others have said = greater velocity, but in shooting terms, not much. as for the bulllets? the Ballistic tips are messy sure but then just head shoot them as even if you body shoot them with the SP bullets, it's still gonna make a mess, I manage to head shoot all of mine, except for the very small ones, and the carcasses are clean as a whistle, no internal bleeding at all, unless you hit the neck or top of the chest, then it's messy, the ballistic tip is also fine for foxes, just keep the ranges suitably short, I have head shot oine and chest shot two others at less than 30m, and they drop on the spot, just avoid large bones in the shoulder as it will blow up on the bone and not do it's job so well, if they're further out than that, then head shoot them, a fow with a hole in it's head tends not to live very long, whatever the size, but make sure you can actually hit the spot, if you're in the least bit unsure you should pass it up, he'll always be around another day. they're a tad bigger than bunnies and tougher too so shot placement is even more critical.

chuffed to bits for you . my cz american is 16 inch and let me tell ya its the best rabbitng tool ive used absolutley deadly even out to 150+ yards . but im led to believe that the shorter the barrel on the cz the crown tends to burn out after a thousand rounds or so ,told this doesnt happen as much on the longer barrels. but by gum its a fab round.
