Borat 8
Size can come from the greyhound as well as the deerhound, I'm running a 30" 1/4 deerhound / 3/4 greyhound bitch which was out of a 28" first cross bitch sired by a 31" coursing greyhound dog. Pure bred deerhound aren't nippy over a short distance but they are also not by any means slow, what they can lack is nippiness and agility although almost any of them will seriously outpace the cloddy bull cross types whose pictures are always being posted up on this site attracting the inevitable "nice strong dog that mate" comments! Deerhounds have a huge length of stride and decent stamina and are perfectly capable of catching rabbits and hares as well as larger stuff. The work I have is best done by large, fast and powerful dogs and these suit me well. As has been said, the deerhound gives nose, coat, feet, stamina, brains, and hunting ability; most have an implacable hatred of foxes and a very strong desire and ability to take large game. Given the scope to practice, most will learn to take and kill large game with minimal carcase damage which is important if you sell the meat on, while still remaining very able on samller game. Most deerhound crosses have that wonderful laid back temperament while still making excellent and generally fairly sensible workers. Curiously, some, like my current strain manage to combine being the gentlest of giants while their owners are around with also being very, very serious guard dogs and believe me, a 30" deerhound/grey that is determined that you aren't going to come into its yard is a dangerous opponent. I have had deerhound crosses ranging from 1/4 deerhound/3/4 greyhound, through first crosses down to line bred 4th and 5th generation deerhound/greyhound hybrids an all have worked well. I currently have a litter of 5/8 deerhound 3/8 greyhound pups which will be 5 weeks old this weekend. these pups were out of my bitch who is 1/4 deerhound/3/4 greyhound by a pure-bred deerhound. I have seen pups by this type of breeding before and they are generally very similar to first crosses. I like this post.. Edited September 24, 2010 by Borat Quote Link to post

Dan Edwards 1,134
What does a deerhound give to a greyhound cross other than it's size, doesn't it just slow it down? just curious. They seem really common on here. Inteligence. Two "ll's". Quote Link to post
