moxy 617
Well eight to be precise before anybody says i cant count Last friday saw me out with the s10 scouting roughly 5 acre of horse paddock before we ferret it next week and mop up the remainder with traps. The land has a good population with a considerable ammount of warrens, counting at least 50-60 rabbits across the land at 10am. All these rabbits have seen is horses and have never encountered anybody with a gun before, they are as green as they come, making for some easy shooting. We are waiting for the wind to pick up one night this week and will hit it with the lamp before we polish them off next week. There is six in the picture but at the end of the hour i had accounted for ten. Friday evening we landed at a mates farm to make a start on the annual rat thinning before it gets hit with rodenticide. The farm is a dairy farm and as we call it up here in no uncertain terms a " shithole ". There is always food on offer and plenty of cover which every summer harbours a good breeding population of rats. Lights out is roughly 10pm and as soon as its pitch black the scratting and squabling starts. Shooting started no sooner as the lights went out and we stayed until around midnight, accounting for around 32 decent sized rats. There is eight in the pic, i will be buggered if i was collecting them all for an end of session pic.(waist deep in cow shit, collecting them from the edges of the midden, no thanks). One thing i did notice quiet often was even with an accupell placed squarely between the eyes at 20yds the odd one or two rats made it a good few feet to cover, whilst others just dropped. Returned monday night and accounted for another twenty between two of us, not bad for an hour. More times will come. 7 Quote Link to post
festa 206
you might be better off shooting the rats with the amount of food lying around i wouldn't be suprised if they didnt touch the rodenticide and apart from the shooting is more fun lol atb gary Quote Link to post

marko 30
yes moxy i do a lot of rat shooting and the sods sometimes make it a few feet away but dont worry mate they eat any shite including one another so any well shot rat is toast anyway to be eaten by the bigger stronger ones thats why you dont find many carcasses lying about the week after you have been also a few generations down the line and they start to become immune to certain pesticides so wack them with the lead. moxy 617
Thanks for the comments lads. Back on the paddock tonight, booked in with the old bill for half eight, mounted the lamp up and away i went, without a coat!! (well it was warm!!) Using the red filter the rabbits just sat, making for easy pickings. The odd couple hot footed away but the rest just sat and waited their turn. The going was good for the first 10 mins, then on cue a flash of lightning and the heavens opened and it absolutely tipped it down. Managed another couple until visibility became nil through the scope, game over. I hadnt wandered very far so most of the bag were lying within close range, collected 8 but couldnt find 2 within the clumps of grass. I will have a scout for them in the morning unless the fox has beat me to them. Absolutely soaked through i wandered back to the motor, collecting another 2 rabbits i had dropped from the gate hole in to the paddock on the way in. Ten rabbits to show for half hours wander and a good soaking!! That will do for me anytime Maybe a blessing that the heavens opened and cut mt foray short, they will still be clueless on the next outing with the lamp, hopefully providing me with a similar bag. Untill next time, cheers. 1 Quote Link to post
