A sporting chance

Recommended Posts

I've been reading through all my old Plummer books recently (think what you like about the guy but his books are very readable - especially Rat hunting man ) and I was trying to remember the name of a book I read in my teens called "A sporting chance" by a guy called Dan Mannix?? (I think).

It contained stories of hunting Bears and Coyotes with dogs, and even had a chapter on an English Badger dig.

Has anyone read this book? and I wonder is it still available today?

Excellent book, used to make "Boomerangs" from the arms on mine and my brothers bunkbeds after reading that, and try to hit ducks in the local park :icon_eek: Had a blowgun sent from the states, got it from an advert in "Guns & Ammo" when I was a kid, after seeing pics in the advert of a guy holding a coyote :D Killed a few rats and a sparrow with it till I lost all the darts :( Tried to order a BIGBORE blowgun a few months ago till someone told me they are now classed as a section5 firearm :o What category do peashooters fall into I wonder?Isnt there a chapter in the book about hunting with ferrets? And a serval or caracal? :hmm:

I have the mailing addie of the french importers into europe of COLDSTEELS bigbore blowguns, they sell a range of darts including mini-broadheads,I was going to order my son one for Xmas when I found out that yes indeed, they are now classed as firearms :o My old one killed rats at ranges of up to 8-10 yards easily enough, and I have seen bamboo ones used in Borneo which were effective at longer distances, but the bamboo darts were approx 8-10 inches long :icon_eek:

Could you imagine kids these days chucking the boomerang shaped bits off their bunk beds at ducks down the local park - surefire ASBO.

:clapper:

No one bothered back then David,I still remember walking past Hector Mouldens garden as a kid when he told me to get my BSA meteor from its slip and pot a starling from his television arial :D
