markha 99
Closest thing that matches for colourings, according to Collins complete wildlife is a drone fly. Based on the colour of the legs, the stripe pattern on the body and the head colour, eye size. However the dark colouring of the upper body suggest hover fly. cheers Mark

markha 99
Im no expert by any stretch, but it looks like it has some of the characteristics of both the drone and a hover fly. The drone has lighter head fur and lighter upper body, where as the hover has dark upper body and dark head fur. Legs and their colouring looks like drone, as does the 3 yellow stripes on the lower body. Could be a hybrid?

ghillies 209
hmmm heres a very similar hover fly (scroll down the linv) but hoverflies are three four times bigger, perhaps a juvinile female? http://outernode.pir.sa.gov.au/forestry/publications_index/forest_health_information/factSheets/robberflies_and_hoverflies
MuttleMcTuttle 21
Not sure what it is... Looks like a skinny little hoverfly to me, but could be either. You got some nice photos there Alan, pity you hadn't got the flash diffuser ready though it would have been good for these shots

Dime 0
Its a Hoverfly - Melanostoma sp. (probably M. scalare). Robber-flies are much more robust flies & the Drone-fly is another species of Hoverfly - Eristalis tenax..
